Job description

Position summary: Responsible for proactively driving area growth and profitability by mentoring project teams, optimizing resource allocations, and ensuring high quality client deliverables across the area.  Responsible to support area operations leadership strategic planning, business development, financial success, and growth in Northern Virgina and Washington, DC in a matrix-based organizational structure. Reports to the Regional Manager.

Compensation for this position is $220,000-$270,000 annually, commensurate with experience, education and certifications. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. 

Essential functions and responsibilities:

Reporting Relationships & Partnerships

  • Provide direction to Office Leaders to achieve regional and local priorities and goals
  • Collaborate with Business Line Leaders to align area growth plans, targets, and pursuits with business line strategies.
  • Partner with Market Leaders to develop and execute market strategies and client engagement to expand presence and win profitable work.
  • Partner with Service Line Leaders to ensure technical excellence, consistent quality and risk management practices, and access to specialized expertise and capacity for pursuits and project delivery.
  • Align with markets and services to support pursuits, client engagement, and delivery through specialized knowledge and thought leadership.
  • Drive staff engagement, retention, and succession planning by providing mentorship, coaching, and performance management ensuring staff development occurs at all levels.

Projects

  • Provide project oversight, coordination and management for significant projects and participate in financial reviews with applicable staff for projects.
  • Provide oversight for contracting strategy, scope management, and change management on key pursuits and active projects as needed.

 Strategy/Business Development

  • Enhance our presence around Transportation and Water, Energy & Environment business lines.
  • Coordinate strategic growth with the Buildings & Facilities and Technology & Innovation business lines.
  • Establish and grow market presence in the area through business development.
  • Promote and facilitate efficient work-sharing across the area and corporate-wide.
  • Drive the application of technology and advancement.

 Financial Oversight

  • Responsible for financial performance against annual and multi-year targets, including revenue, profitability, backlog, and utilization.
  • Develop and manage the area's annual budget and monthly forecasts in partnership with Regional Manager to implement staffing plans and corrective actions to achieve targets.
  • Ensure timely billing and collections to support cash flow and monitor accounts receivable and lead escalation/resolution on key accounts while ensuring compliance with contract terms and client requirements.

Required Skills
  • Proven ability to lead within a matrix-based AEC professional services environment; build high-performing teams and maintain strong working relationships.
  • Strong planning, prioritization, and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple offices and teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including executive-level and client-facing communications.
  • Self-starter with full ability to operate independently with substantial autonomy
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to leverage project and financial reporting systems to monitor performance.

Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited program
  • Professional Engineer License or equivalent professional registration.
  • 20+ years of industry experience including progressive leadership, project management oversight, client management, and business development.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or influencing financial performance (budgeting, forecasting, utilization, and profitability) within a professional services environment. 
  • Experience working with clients at the state, county, and major municipality level.

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment. Work is sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. 

Regular travel between the offices in the region will be required to meet with office leadership and staff. Travel will also be required at times to our corporate office in Hunt Valley, MD.
