What Is an Architectural Engineer?

As an architectural engineer, it is your job to oversee the planning and construction of buildings, especially during early developmental stages, to ensure architectural and structural integrity. Your work may also encompass building renovations and remodels. Your main duties are to analyze building plans and supervise construction with a focus on functionality, structural stability, and safety. Some architectural engineers focus on a specific area, such as lighting or HVAC, while others work on an entire project. The job involves close collaboration with construction crews and project stakeholders, especially architects and project supervisors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architectural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architectural Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, architectural design, and building codes, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software, Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems, and relevant certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are often required. Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate effectively with architects, contractors, and clients. These skills are crucial for delivering safe, innovative, and efficient building projects that meet both technical standards and client expectations.

How does an architectural engineer typically collaborate with architects and construction teams during a project?

Architectural engineers work closely with architects to ensure that design concepts are structurally sound, safe, and efficient. They often participate in project meetings, review blueprints, and recommend engineering solutions to potential issues. Throughout the construction phase, they coordinate with contractors and other engineering specialists to address on-site challenges and ensure that the building meets both design and regulatory standards. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills and the ability to balance technical requirements with creative design intent.

What are architectural engineers?

Architectural engineers are professionals who apply engineering principles to the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and other structures. They work closely with architects to ensure that buildings are structurally sound, energy-efficient, safe, and sustainable. Their expertise covers areas like structural systems, building materials, HVAC, lighting, acoustics, and electrical systems. Architectural engineers play a key role in making sure that a building's design is practical, cost-effective, and meets all necessary codes and regulations.

What is the difference between Architectural Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectArchitectural EngineerCivil Engineer

Job description

We are seeking a detail-oriented Industrial Facilities Architecture Engineer to lead the planning, layout optimization, and architectural integration of our new, high-precision manufacturing complex. This role is essential for ensuring that our production floors, cleanrooms, and support facilities are designed for maximum efficiency, safety, and scalability.

This position is based initially in Tempe and Peoria, AZ during the construction and commissioning phase, with a long-term transition to our flagship Peoria operations center. You will act as the architectural bridge between initial site design and full-scale factory operations.

Key Responsibilities

Design Coordination & Integration

  • Multidisciplinary Alignment: Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external consultants to integrate architectural designs with complex MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing), utility, and process systems.

  • Layout Optimization: Design and refine the spatial planning for high-tech manufacturing areas, cleanroom environments, and administrative support zones.

  • Drawing Validation: Review and authorize architectural blueprints, material specifications, and technical drawings to ensure they meet operational demands.

Compliance & Governance

  • Code Stewardship: Ensure all designs and modifications adhere to the International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), and local safety regulations.

  • Permitting Support: Facilitate the approval process for building construction and occupancy permits by providing technical documentation and architectural expertise.

  • Sustainability: Incorporate energy-efficient materials and sustainable design principles to meet corporate environmental goals.

Construction Oversight

  • Site Inspections: Manage the architectural integrity of the build-out through regular site walkthroughs and quality control checks.

  • Revision Management: Maintain precise documentation of all architectural plans, as-builts, and revisions throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Innovation: Evaluate emerging technologies and industrial materials that offer improved functionality and cost-effectiveness.

Required Qualifications

Educational & Professional Foundation:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or a related structural engineering field.

  • Experience: 3+ years of architectural coordination experience, specifically within industrial, pharmaceutical, or advanced high-tech production facilities.

  • Code Mastery: Strong working knowledge of IBC and IFC codes, fire safety standards, and controlled-environment (Cleanroom) design.

  • Software Toolkit: Mastery of AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and MS Office.

Physical & Operational Readiness:

  • Project Lifecycle: Experience with the "ground-up" process, including design, construction, and system startup.

  • Professional Credentials: A Professional Engineering (PE) license or registered Architect status is a significant plus.

  • Medical Fitness: Must be medically qualified to wear a respirator and work in proximity to industrial equipment.

  • Site Adaptability: Ability to climb ladders, work at elevations, and navigate active construction sites in various weather conditions.

Location & Mobility:

  • Ability to work onsite at Tempe and Peoria locations, with hybrid flexibility available as the project matures.
