What does an architectural drafting intern do?

An Architectural Drafting Intern assists architects and designers by creating technical drawings and plans for buildings and structures, typically using computer-aided design (CAD) software. They help translate design concepts into detailed blueprints that contractors and engineers use during construction. Interns may also assist with research, preparing presentation materials, and reviewing building codes or regulations. The role is a hands-on learning opportunity meant to develop drafting skills and gain practical experience in the architectural field.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an architectural drafting intern?

To thrive as an Architectural Drafting Intern, you need a solid understanding of architectural design principles, technical drawing, and familiarity with building codes, often supported by progress toward a degree in architecture or drafting. Proficiency in CAD software like AutoCAD and Revit, as well as experience with rendering tools and document management systems, is typically required. Attention to detail, willingness to learn, effective communication, and teamwork make a candidate stand out in this collaborative environment. These skills ensure that design concepts are accurately translated into technical drawings, facilitating efficient project development and integration within professional architectural teams.

What typical responsibilities can I expect as an architectural drafting intern?

As an Architectural Drafting Intern, you'll primarily support the design team by creating and revising technical drawings, assisting with 3D modeling, and preparing construction documents under close supervision. You'll often collaborate with architects and engineers to ensure your drafts meet project specifications and comply with relevant codes. This hands-on involvement provides valuable exposure to industry-standard software and processes, helping you build practical skills while contributing directly to project deliverables. Your work is crucial in streamlining the design workflow and ensuring accuracy in documentation.

To secure an architectural drafting intern position, candidates should develop proficiency in CAD software like AutoCAD or Revit, build a strong portfolio showcasing relevant projects, and pursue a related degree such as architecture or design. Internships are often available through university career centers, architecture firms, or online job boards, and may require a minimum GPA or prior coursework in design principles.

How to get into architectural drafting?

To become an architectural drafting intern, typically pursue a high school diploma or equivalent, then obtain a postsecondary certificate or associate degree in drafting, architecture, or a related field.
