AspectArchitectural Designer Project Designer

Architectural Designer Project Designers are involved in conceptual design, client communication, and project development, often holding degrees in architecture and obtaining licensure. They work closely with clients and teams to develop design ideas and oversee project progress. Architectural Drafters primarily focus on creating detailed technical drawings based on architects' or designers' concepts, usually with technical training or certification. They typically work under the supervision of architects or designers and do not engage in client interactions or design development. While both roles require technical skills, Architectural Designer Project Designers have broader responsibilities in design and project management, whereas Architectural Drafters concentrate on drafting and documentation tasks.

What are some common challenges Architectural Designer Project Designers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Architectural Designer Project Designers often juggle several projects at different stages, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Balancing client expectations, project deadlines, and coordination with consultants requires strong organizational skills and clear communication. Additionally, adapting to shifting project scopes and unforeseen issues, such as permitting delays or design changes, is a common part of the role. Proactively collaborating with colleagues and leveraging project management tools can help mitigate these challenges and ensure successful project delivery.

You'll play a key role in shaping projects from early concepts through construction documentation, balancing thoughtful design with technical precision. This is an opportunity for an emerging architectural professional ready to take ownership of project components, collaborate closely with clients and consultants, and help move projects forward with confidence and clarity.

In this role, you'll contribute across every phase of the process, from design development and documentation to construction administration and project coordination. You'll also help mentor junior team members, support quality standards, and continue building your path toward licensure and future project leadership.

Who You Are

You're a detail-driven designer who can zoom out to see the big picture while staying focused on the technical details that make projects successful. You enjoy solving complex design challenges, collaborating across disciplines, and finding ways to improve both the work and the process behind it.

You take ownership of your work, communicate proactively, and thrive in a fast-paced environment where creativity and accountability go hand in hand. You're confident leading defined project scopes with minimal oversight, mentoring junior designers, and contributing to a collaborative team culture. You're also actively working toward licensure and excited to keep growing your technical and leadership skills.

What You'll Do

  • Lead design development for assigned project scopes and building types
  • Translate client goals, program requirements, and code constraints into coordinated design solutions
  • Produce complete permit and construction drawing sets with strong attention to detail and constructability
  • Develop project details, specifications, and material documentation
  • Coordinate drawings and models with consultants and internal teams
  • Participate in client presentations, design reviews, and QA/QC processes
  • Conduct site observations and prepare professional field reports
  • Review RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings alongside project leadership
  • Support punch lists, project closeout activities, and construction evaluations
  • Track task-level schedules, deliverables, and project coordination efforts
  • Communicate project updates, challenges, and solutions proactively
  • Contribute to scope, fee, and project planning discussions
  • Mentor Designer 1s and interns on technical execution and workflow efficiency

Tools You'll Use

  • Revit and BIM coordination tools
  • Construction documentation and detailing software
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Project scheduling and coordination platforms
  • Building codes, accessibility standards, and technical reference resources

What You'll Bring

  • Progress toward architectural licensure, including active AXP and ARE participation
  • Experience producing coordinated construction documents and permit sets
  • Strong understanding of building codes, accessibility requirements, and construction systems
  • Ability to lead defined project scopes with minimal supervision
  • Experience coordinating with consultants, vendors, and project stakeholders
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to mentor junior team members and contribute to team success
  • Experience with feasibility studies, programming, schematic design, and construction administration
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to high-quality design and documentation
