What is the difference between Architectural Consulting vs Structural Engineering?

AspectArchitectural ConsultingStructural Engineering
Required CredentialsArchitecture degree, licensing (e.g., NCARB)Engineering degree, PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, client meetings, project planningConstruction sites, design analysis, technical calculations
Industry UsageDesigning building aesthetics and layoutsEnsuring structural safety and integrity

Architectural Consulting focuses on building design, aesthetics, and client needs, while Structural Engineering emphasizes the safety and stability of structures. Both roles collaborate closely but serve different technical and creative functions within the building industry.

What is architectural consulting?

Architectural consulting is a professional service where experts in architecture provide advice and guidance on building design, construction, renovation, and project management. Consultants help clients make informed decisions about design concepts, materials, building codes, sustainability, and cost efficiency. They often work with architects, contractors, and property owners to ensure projects meet functional, aesthetic, and regulatory requirements. The goal is to optimize the outcome of a construction or renovation project through expert insight and problem-solving.

How do architectural consultants typically collaborate with clients and project teams during the design process?

Architectural consultants work closely with clients to understand their needs, budgets, and vision, often participating in frequent meetings and design reviews. They also collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including engineers, contractors, and interior designers—by providing expertise, technical guidance, and design recommendations throughout the project lifecycle. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as consultants are responsible for ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned and that the project progresses smoothly from concept to completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architectural Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architectural Consultant, you need expertise in architectural design principles, building codes, and project management, typically supported by a professional degree in architecture and relevant licensure. Proficiency with CAD/BIM software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SketchUp is essential, along with familiarity with project management tools. Strong communication, problem-solving, and client relationship skills set top consultants apart. These capabilities ensure effective project delivery, client satisfaction, and compliance with technical and regulatory standards.

Job description

Join the Slingers! Slingshot is seeking an experienced, licensed Architect II (6+ years of professional experience) to join our passionate, purpose-driven studio in Des Moines. We're a small but mighty team of architects and designers dedicated to crafting meaningful, human-centered commercial spaces that elevate everyday life and strengthen Midwestern communities. Our work spans architecture, interiors, and urbanism — always with a focus on clarity, precision, and real impact.

As a teaching studio, we value team members who take ownership of their work, mentor others, and grow alongside talented colleagues. In this role, you'll lead technical design aspects on major projects, tackle complex challenges independently, and contribute to innovative solutions that best meet client needs — with opportunities to guide less experienced team members and shape project outcomes from concept through construction.

What You'll Do

  • Take responsibility for specific technical design aspects of assigned major projects, including investigating, evaluating, and recommending design solutions that best meet the client's needs.
  • Provide professional architectural consulting services for planning, design, and coordination on medium to large, complex projects.
  • Independently apply advanced architectural concepts and designs to carry out complex or novel assignments.
  • Develop new or improved techniques and procedures as needed to address project challenges.
  • Perform advanced analyses, develop sophisticated design solutions, and prepare detailed documentation for projects of significant size and complexity.
  • Lead coordination with consultants, contractors, and stakeholders on technical issues, cost implications, and value-engineering opportunities.
  • Produce and oversee complete construction documentation packages, ensuring high-quality drawings, specifications, and details.
  • Demonstrate expertise across all design phases and effectively incorporate and synthesize feedback.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced architects and team members.
  • Ensure compliance with building codes, accessibility standards, zoning requirements, and firm protocols.
  • Manage multiple project workstreams; support senior team members on project direction and client interactions.
  • Conduct or lead construction-phase services, including site observations, submittal reviews, RFIs, change orders, and field reports.
  • Present complex design concepts confidently to clients and stakeholders.
  • Attend and contribute to client meetings, design reviews, and collaborative sessions.
  • Apply and help refine the SSA design process and key software tools (ArchiCAD, SketchUp, etc.).

Who We're Looking For: The ideal "Slinger" holds a professional degree in architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch), is a licensed professional architect (certification as a licensed professional required), and brings six or more years of related professional experience. You thrive when you:

  • Are a self-starter who can work autonomously on complex assignments and shares our drive to create meaningful work in a collaborative environment.
  • Excel in a fast-paced, small-team setting committed to exceeding expectations daily.
  • Demonstrate advanced design and technical skills, with a generous approach to teamwork, mentorship, and clear communication.
  • Possess deep knowledge of building systems, materials, codes, sustainability principles, and construction documentation best practices.
  • Have strong sketching, modeling, rendering, and visualization skills.
  • Proficient in ArchiCAD (or similar BIM software), Adobe Creative Suite, and MS Office; familiarity with additional tools such as Miro is a plus.
  • Bring excellent verbal and written communication abilities for client presentations and team guidance.
  • Can work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team and mentoring junior team members.
  • Are highly organized and adept at managing time, tasks, and priorities across multiple complex projects.

What We Offer

  • 40 hrs work week
  • Remote Work Opportunities (after onboarding and training are completed)
  • Flexible Schedule with 9a-3p core hours
  • Health Insurance
  • Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Life Insurance, STD & LTD covered 100% for employee
  • Maternity Leave
  • 401k plan with Company Match
  • Monthly Gym Benefit
  • Volunteer Time Off
  • Professional Development Stipend
  • Leadership Involved In Day-to-Day
  • A Teaching Studio & Collaborative Environment
  • Relaxed Dress Code
  • Dog-Friendly Office
  • Beverages & Snacks
  • Quarterly Team Events
  • Annual Team Celebration

This full-time position is available in our Des Moines studio.
