How much do architect in training jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for architect in training in Arizona is $119,986.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,800.00 and $154,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is AI replacing architects?

AI is not replacing architects but is increasingly used as a tool to assist in tasks such as design analysis, visualization, and project management. Architects still require creative thinking, technical skills, and professional licensure, which AI cannot replicate. The role of an architect involves complex decision-making and client interaction that AI cannot fully automate.

How much do learning architects make?

Learning architects, also known as instructional designers or learning experience designers, typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with specialized skills in e-learning tools and curriculum development can earn higher salaries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architect In Training, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect In Training, you need a solid background in architectural design, drafting, and building codes, generally supported by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward completing the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and convey design concepts clearly. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to projects, meeting client needs, and progressing toward architectural licensure.

What is an architect in training called?

An architect in training is typically called an intern architect or architectural intern. This stage involves gaining practical experience under supervision while working toward licensure, which requires passing the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

How much does a trainee architect earn?

A trainee architect typically earns between $30,000 and $50,000 annually, depending on location, education, and experience. Salaries often increase as they gain licensure and develop skills in design software and project management.

What are some common challenges faced by an Architect In Training and how can they be overcome?

As an Architect In Training, you'll often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple project deadlines, adapting to evolving client requirements, and mastering various design and drafting software. Additionally, transitioning academic knowledge into practical solutions can require guidance and patience. Overcoming these hurdles often involves proactive communication with senior architects, seeking regular feedback, and dedicating time to developing both technical and soft skills within a collaborative team environment.

What are Architect In Training positions?

An Architect In Training (AIT) is an entry-level professional who has completed a degree in architecture and is working toward becoming a licensed architect. AITs typically work under the supervision of a licensed architect, gaining practical experience required for licensure. They assist with design, drafting, project management, and other architectural tasks while logging the experience hours needed for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This role is a crucial step in the progression from architectural education to full professional licensure.

What is the difference between Architect In Training vs Architectural Designer?

AspectArchitect In TrainingArchitectural Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a professional degree in architecture and is working towards licensureUsually holds a degree in architecture or related field, but not necessarily pursuing licensure
Work EnvironmentWorks under supervision in architecture firms, assisting with design and documentationWorks on design development, drafting, and project presentations, often in similar settings
Industry UsageCommonly used during the licensure process, indicating a candidate in trainingUsed for professionals involved in design work but not yet licensed

The main difference is that an Architect In Training is actively working towards licensure and typically works under supervision, while an Architectural Designer may have a similar educational background but is not necessarily pursuing licensure at that moment. Both roles involve design and drafting, but the Architect In Training is on the path to becoming a licensed architect.

Job description

Overview
At SSOE, we do not just design buildings; we architect the backbone of the digital economy. We are looking for a Senior Architect to lead our most technically sophisticated data center projects, driving the design of high-availability, power-dense environments for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise clients. This role is for a specialist who thrives at the intersection of scalable modular infrastructure and mission-critical resilience. You will be the architectural anchor of a multidisciplinary team of experts to integrate complex cooling and power systems into seamless, sustainable designs. From steering Revit/BIM strategy to navigating ASHRAE and NFPA compliance, you will own the design lifecycle from schematic through construction. If you are ready to deliver the infrastructure that keeps the world connected, your next career milestone starts here.
AI and Innovation
At SSOE, we don't just talk about the future, we build it. As a leader in industry AI adoption, we empower our team to work smarter by providing responsible access to the industry leading AI Large Language Models, vibe-coding platforms, and securely integrating advanced tools into every role. From day one, you'll receive the training and support needed to leverage AI as a core tool for enhancing productivity, sparking creativity, and streamlining complex workflows.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the architectural design and technical documentation for large-scale data center projects, overseeing everything from site planning and core/shell to complex white space and support area configurations.
  • Develop comprehensive Basis of Design (BoD) documents, programming, and site-fit analyses that prioritize power density, tiered redundancy, and long-term modular expansion.
  • Function as a technical lead during milestone presentations and design charrettes, translating complex operational requirements into actionable architectural solutions.
  • Develop and maintain BIM models using Revit, coordinate across disciplines through federated models, and perform clash detection with Navisworks to minimize field issues and RFIs during construction.
  • Interpret and apply codes and standards including IBC, NFPA, TIA-942 data center standards, and local jurisdictional requirements to ensure regulatory compliance throughout design phases.
  • Lead cross-discipline coordination with electrical, mechanical, process/piping, fire protection, structural, civil, and IT/telecom to eliminate clashes and ensure system operability.
  • Prepare and review construction documents, specifications, and detail drawings, ensuring completeness and technical accuracy for client review, approval, and permitting.
  • Conduct site walks/assessments and verify existing conditions influencing architectural planning and system placement to optimize scalability and modular growth potential.
  • Lead quality control reviews and validation of design deliverables, providing technical leadership and mentoring junior staff architects to elevate team competency.
  • Coordinate submittal reviews, respond to RFIs with technically precise clarifications, and manage timely package turnovers to meet project schedules.
  • Document and track design changes rigorously through formal change control processes to maintain alignment with client expectations and contractual obligations.
  • Integrate sustainable design principles where applicable, supporting LEED documentation and energy-efficient material selections to minimize environmental impact.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture from an accredited program is required.
  • Licensed Architect with responsible charge authority; ability to obtain additional state registrations as project needs dictate.
  • Minimum of twelve years of professional architectural experience, with a majority specializing in mission-critical/data center data center facility design.
  • Deep understanding of scalable data center design principles including modular growth, tiered redundancy, and critical power and cooling infrastructure.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant codes and standards, including IBC, NFPA, and TIA-942 standards.
  • Strong technical communication skills, capable of effectively interfacing with clients, contractors, and internal discipline leads.
  • Experience mentoring junior architects and technical staff, driving professional development within integrated project teams.
  • Salary Range: $120,000 - $160,000/year depending on location, education, depth of relevant experience. Opportunity for ample rewards, leadership incentive/bonus program, and ownership investment opportunities.
  • Benefits: Includes comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, 401K retirement savings plan (with company matching), opportunities for professional development and training (including support for relevant licensure & certifications), and generous PTO & paid holidays.

Preferred Qualifications (nice To Have, But Not Required)
  • Direct exposure to hyperscale or colocation data center facilities and understanding of their unique design and operational demands.
  • Experience delivering LEED-certified projects, with familiarity in sustainable architectural materials and energy-saving design strategies.
  • Background supporting commissioning and startup phases of critical facility projects, including constructability reviews and coordination of system testing.
  • Awareness of project cost management and schedule constraints to balance design innovation with practical delivery imperatives.
