Your Opportunity
We have an immediate opportunity for an Engineer in Training who wants to contribute to our multi-disciplinary teams working on a wide variety of water resources projects. This includes, but is not limited to, water/wastewater projects, and urban drainage/stormwater projects, as well as the potential to work on coastal restoration, stream restoration, wetland restoration, floodplain studies, and similar projects. Our strong team continues to grow, so it is an exciting time to join us as we continue our success and create more opportunities for our staff's growth and development.
In general, the successful candidate will report directly to a Project Engineer and/or Project Manager and will assist in the execution of routine aspects of civil engineering assignments, including both office and field work, on a wide range of multi-disciplinary projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Use knowledge of general concepts of relevant civil engineering elements including system hydraulics, surveying and topographic mapping, geotechnical considerations, grading, utility investigations and analyses.
  • Assists team in preparing civil designs, drawings, plan sets, specifications, presentations and reports.
  • Conducts basic calculations and performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned and under the supervision of a project engineer.
  • Coordinate with engineers, scientists, and technical staff to ensure that the project needs are met in a timely and effective manner.
  • Support civil, environmental, coastal, estuarine, and stream restoration modeling and engineering-design.
  • Conduct field work for civil, environmental, coastal, estuarine, and stream assessments, watershed plans, permitting and other efforts.
  • Assists in supporting the civil team in providing support services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information and contract document clarifications, as well as conducting construction engineering inspections, NDPES QCI inspections and associated field reports.
  • Equipment operations may include backpack and RTK GPS equipment, ATV, 4-wheel drive trucks/SUVs, boats, and/or pulling a utility trailer.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Must be a registered Engineer-in-Training in the State of Alabama or have the ability to obtain within six months.
  • Basic understanding of general concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design including gravity and pressure systems, geotechnical, survey, storm water/drainage design, road design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
  • Ability to interpret sketches, engineering drawings, and other similar material.
  • Experience with coastal, stream and/or wetland habitat assessments and/or restoration is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required.
  • Skills with relevant discipline software, such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, HydroCAD, XPSWMM, and HEC-RAS modeling, are very desirable.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Be a self-motivated individual, possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Be adept at prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Must have a valid Driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Field experience is very desirable.
  • Ability to walk 2-4 miles per day in rough terrain and lift and carry items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Experience with driving 4-wheel drive trucks/SUVs, pulling utility trailers and operating ATV and small vessels is an asset.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil, Environmental or Coastal Engineering, with CAD and GIS coursework. Master of Science degree is preferred.
  • 0 to 5 years of engineering experience
  • Co-op/Internship experience preferred.
  • Education or experience with surface water resources, natural resources, soil science, or hydrogeology preferred.

Typical field work environment may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Office work with computers and sitting at a desk for data processing and report writing.
