What is an architect developer?

An Architect Developer is a professional who blends software development expertise with architectural design skills to create scalable and efficient systems. They are responsible for both the high-level system design and hands-on coding, ensuring that architectural decisions align with business and technical requirements. This role requires deep knowledge of software engineering, cloud architecture, and modern development frameworks. Architect Developers collaborate with stakeholders to define system specifications and oversee implementation. Their goal is to build robust, maintainable, and future-proof software solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architect developer?

To thrive as an Architect Developer, you need a solid background in software development, application architecture, and systems design, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with architectural design tools (such as UML, ArchiMate), cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), and certifications in architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help in aligning technical solutions with business goals and collaborating across teams. These capabilities are critical for designing robust, scalable systems that meet organizational needs and driving technical vision.

How does an architect developer typically collaborate with other teams within an organization?

An Architect Developer frequently works at the intersection of multiple teams, engaging with both software engineers and business stakeholders to gather requirements and define technical solutions. They serve as a bridge between the development team, quality assurance, product management, and sometimes operations teams, ensuring that architectural decisions align with business objectives and technical feasibility. Regular meetings, documentation reviews, and design sessions are common, and clear communication is key to managing expectations and facilitating successful project outcomes. This collaborative approach ensures that solutions are not just technically sound but also practical and aligned with organizational goals.

As MISO’s Senior Security Architect, you will lead the design, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of secure architectures across enterprise systems, applications, and cloud environments. This role provides expert guidance on current security challenges while anticipating future trends to proactively shape strong, resilient solutions. You’ll think like an adversary, ensuring security strategies evolve with the changing threat landscape. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential, as you’ll mentor team members and provide technical direction to delivery and solution design groups. The architect contributes to threat modeling, reference architectures, and repeatable security patterns that reduce risk and improve consistency. Additionally, you will serve as a strategic advisor for secure digital transformation, aligning AI adoption, enterprise architecture, engineering, and compliance to ensure sustainable, business‑aligned security decisions.

Your responsibilities as our Senior Security Architect include:

  • Partnering with leaders and technical teams to design future‑state architectures, reference models, and repeatable security patterns that align technology strategy, business needs, and security outcomes.
  • Performing risk assessments, supporting broader risk management activities, and developing effective mitigation plans.
  • Evaluating, selecting, and designing security tools, controls, and services while guiding teams in adopting DevSecOps and secure AI practices.
  • Participating in security assessments (including pen tests, vulnerability reviews, audits, and simulations) and strengthening incident response and recovery processes.
  • Staying current on emerging security threats, analyzing risks, and ensuring systems and applications are resilient against evolving threats.
  • Engaging with vendors to ensure alignment with MISO security standards and defining guardrails for human‑versus‑automation decision‑making in security workflows.
  • Delivering clear, executive‑ready risk narratives that translate architecture trade‑offs into business impact, resilience, and regulatory implications.

Skills needed for our Senior Security Architect:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Security, Computer Science or related field (required).
  • 8+ years of information technology administration experience or equivalent combination of work and educational experiences.
  • 5+ years of security engineering, cloud, infrastructure or DevOps roles.
  • Relevant technical and/or architecture certifications are preferred (TOGAF, AWS, Azure, etc.).
  • Experience in creating secure reference architectures or design patterns.
  • Demonstrated experience governing AI-assisted security workflows with accountable human oversight and quality controls.
  • Experience presenting architecture risk and recommendations to senior leadership in business terms.
  • Proven record leading cross-functional security architecture initiatives that produce measurable risk reduction and delivery efficiency.
  • Understanding of NIST, ISO, or other security frameworks.
  • Proven knowledge of security (preferred - CISSP, CISA, SSCP, AWS/Azure security specialty, GCIH, other GIAC certifications, OSCP, CEH, etc.).

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
