What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ArcGIS Machine Learning Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive in ArcGIS Machine Learning, you need expertise in geographic information systems (GIS), spatial analysis, data science, and a background in computer science, statistics, or geography. Familiarity with ArcGIS software, Python programming, and machine learning libraries such as scikit-learn or TensorFlow is typically required, along with certifications like Esri Technical Certification. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to interpret complex spatial data and convey insights to diverse stakeholders. These skills are essential for leveraging geospatial data to generate actionable intelligence and support data-driven decision-making.

What is ArcGIS Machine Learning?

ArcGIS Machine Learning refers to the integration of machine learning techniques with ArcGIS, Esri's geographic information system software. It enables users to analyze spatial data, identify patterns, and make predictions using tools like classification, clustering, and regression within the ArcGIS platform. These capabilities help solve complex geographic problems in fields such as urban planning, environmental science, and resource management. ArcGIS provides both built-in machine learning tools and supports integration with open-source frameworks like scikit-learn and TensorFlow.

How do ArcGIS Machine Learning professionals typically collaborate with GIS analysts and data scientists within a project team?

ArcGIS Machine Learning professionals often work closely with GIS analysts to prepare and preprocess spatial data, ensuring datasets are clean and relevant for modeling. They also partner with data scientists to design, implement, and validate machine learning algorithms tailored to geospatial problems, such as predictive mapping or spatial pattern detection. Regular collaboration occurs through project meetings, code reviews, and joint presentations to stakeholders, fostering a multidisciplinary approach that leverages both spatial expertise and advanced analytics. This teamwork ensures solutions are both scientifically robust and operationally effective.

Job description

What Impact You'll Have:

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist with experience processing, analyzing, and visualizing large structured and unstructured datasets who will use their technical expertise, mission knowledge, and customer-centric focus to create and deliver advanced analytic solutions, automation, machine learning models, and compelling data-driven visual products. This is a mission-driven opportunity to support our government customer, with downstream impact to mission partners across the Intelligence Community (IC) and the Department of War (DOW).

The Senior Data Scientist will work closely with customer stakeholders, team leads, analysts, and visualization experts to understand complex challenges and develop innovative solutions that blend operational mission support with business analytics. This role will uncover key insights, identify trends, and transform complex data into actionable discoveries that inform mission execution and strategic decision-making.

As a technical leader and Subject Matter Expert (SME), this individual will help architect and deliver advanced analytics, AI/ML capabilities, automated workflows, and custom visualizations. The role will also support modernization and division-wide rebranding efforts by creating impactful products and capabilities that enhance both mission effectiveness and business performance.

What You'll Be Owning:

  • Leverage customer-specific Esri ArcGIS Enterprise portals (similar to Safehouse and ICGIS) to analyze and derive insights from the customer's databases, identify opportunities for increased efficiency, and develop visualizations and automation solutions that enhance both mission operations and business analytics.
  • Design and build highly customized visualizations, dashboards, and interactive applications using Python libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Plotly, Dash, and Bokeh.
  • Create bespoke visualization products that provide critical operational insights and support both business analytics and mission decision-making.
  • Develop automation solutions that streamline workflows, reduce manual effort, and improve the delivery of analytic and business intelligence products.
  • Develop advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) models, and predictive solutions to identify patterns, relationships, and trends within diverse datasets.
  • Capture and communicate key insights through business analytics, identifying trends, performance indicators, and actionable discoveries that support strategic decision-making.
  • Work hand in hand with team leads, analysts, and visualization experts to support division-wide rebranding efforts and enhance the presentation and delivery of mission products.
  • Work with large structured and unstructured datasets in analytical and modeling environments to solve complex operational and intelligence challenges.
  • Lead and participate in the design of innovative solutions and refinement of existing analytic processes and workflows.
  • Translate customer requirements and mission challenges into actionable technical solutions, timelines, and resource plans.
  • Develop and maintain automated data processing pipelines and repeatable analytic workflows.
  • Conduct peer reviews to improve the quality of methodologies, procedures, and technical solutions.
  • Mentor team members and help build high-performing technical teams.
  • Present technical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What You Must Have:

  • Active TS/SCI clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a CI Polygraph.
  • Strong working knowledge and hands-on experience with Esri solutions such as Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and secure enterprise Esri portals such as Safehouse and ICGIS.
