Job description

Position Title: TREE INVENTORY TECHNICIAN
Department: ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Supervisor: City Engineer
Position: Part-Time
Salary range as per current Salary Ordinance
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate a city vehicle to travel assigned routes and locate public trees situated within the City right-of-way
  • Collect tree data using ArcGIS Field Maps and the City's Asset Management System to document tree attributes, site conditions, and photographs.
  • Identify tree species or record unknown species for later review by the City Arborist.
  • Measure tree characteristics including trunk diameter (DBH), canopy spread, and height estimates using standard field methods.
  • Assess site conditions by documenting land use, planting space, site type, and environmental constraints.
  • Document infrastructure conflicts such as sidewalk lifting, curb displacement, and overhead wire interference.
  • Evaluate tree condition by assessing canopy health, wood condition, structural defects, and overall vitality.
  • Identify potential hazards and flag trees requiring further inspection or risk assessment.
  • Verify adjacent property addresses to ensure accurate and complete record-keeping.
  • Maintain accurate digital records by reviewing collected data for completeness, accuracy, and consistency with city standards.
  • Communicate field findings to the City Arborist or Public Works Supervisor when unusual conditions or hazards are observed.
  • Assist with related urban forestry tasks as assigned by supervisory staff.

Skills and Knowledge Needed:
  • Demonstrates proficiency with GIS and mobile data tools including ArcGIS Field Maps, GPS-enabled devices, and digital data-collection applications.
  • Possesses basic knowledge of tree identification or the ability to learn common northwest Indiana species.
  • Shows strong attention to detail when measuring trees, observing conditions, and entering data.
  • Works effectively outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
  • Works independently for extended periods while maintaining productivity and accuracy.
  • Communicates clearly with supervisors regarding field observations and data issues.
  • Uses technology competently including tablets, smartphones, and data-entry software.
  • Practices safe driving habits while operating a city vehicle for daily fieldwork.

Education & Experience Required:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
  • The ability to perform physical field tasks, including walking, bending, measuring, and carrying equipment, is required.
  • One year of experience in fieldwork, environmental work, landscaping, forestry, GIS, or a related area is preferred.

Experience using mobile applications or GIS tools is preferred, although training will be provided.
