An Arborist Apprenticeship is an entry-level position where individuals learn to care for and maintain trees under the guidance of experienced arborists. Apprentices gain hands-on experience in pruning, tree removal, disease management, and equipment use while also learning safety procedures. This role typically involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and requires physical stamina. Many apprenticeships include classroom instruction to complement on-the-job training. Upon completion, apprentices may qualify for certification and advance to higher positions in arboriculture.
To thrive as an Arborist Apprentice, you need a foundational knowledge of tree biology, physical fitness, and a willingness to learn proper pruning and maintenance techniques, usually supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with basic hand and power tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and potentially a Chainsaw Safety Certification are often required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities are essential for performing tree care safely and efficiently while supporting experienced arborists and ensuring customer satisfaction.
As an Arborist Apprentice, you will assist with a variety of tree care tasks including pruning, planting, removal, and performing routine maintenance under the guidance of certified arborists. Your responsibilities often include operating and maintaining equipment, ensuring job site safety, and learning industry best practices both on the ground and—eventually—in the trees. Teamwork is essential, as you’ll work closely with other crew members to complete projects efficiently and support one another during challenging tasks. Over time, apprentices are given increasing responsibility and may progress toward more advanced roles or certifications as they gain experience.

The Scope of work of this business is primarily tree care. We do all aspects of arboriculture covering pruning, planting, structural supports, plant health care and diagnostics. We do tree removals as well, but this business focuses more on conserving trees rather than removing. Aspen Arbor Care has recently acquired a 45-year-old tree business whose owner remains in the field for consultations and is an ISA certified arborist and possess a college degree in arboriculture. The recent owner is also an experienced ISA certified Arborist. Qualified applicants will either have the ability or learn the abilities to climb trees, run an aerial lift, run a chain saw, pruning and planting trees, plant health care / diagnostics and be able to run the equipment. We are looking for a long-term employee. Pay scale for qualified applicants would be between $20.00 - $32.50 per hour. Any further benefits will be discussed after a period of employment.
