Job description

Overview The City of Louisville is now accepting applications for an experienced Aquatics Specialist. This position is full-time, year-round, and eligible for benefits. This role is vital to the operation of our Aquatics division as the selected candidate will help maintain daily operations of the Louisville Recreation Center pools and Memory Square outdoor pool.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is a natural leader, experienced lifeguard and capable instructor. The Aquatics Specialist works under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor and will help to ensure the safety for all guests in the Aquatics areas. This position is responsible for assisting in the daily operations of the aquatics area by supervising and participating in the effective scanning and supervision of all pools, ensuring lifeguard staff is properly trained, overseeing and administering daily pool and staff schedules, engaging the community with high-quality customer service and people skills, acting as support for any scheduled programming in the pools including swim lessons.

Examples of Duties Majority of hours worked are lifeguarding the pools and being the manager on duty for part-time aquatics staff. Perform duties of all pool positions within the Swim and Fitness Center's indoor and outdoor pools, to include lifeguarding, swim instruction, deck supervision, pool maintenance, water balance and chemistry adjustments. Demonstrate proficiency in oversight of large and diverse groups of aquatic staff, forecasting scheduling needs, and maintaining a pristine/clean facility.

Teach American Red Cross Lifeguard Courses and Community CPR Courses. Coordinate, plan, implement, oversee and evaluate lifeguard in-service training. Direct and perform patron surveillance and always ensure patron safety in and around the pool area.

Facilitate new staff orientation and lifeguard development "shadow" training. Assists the Aquatics Supervisor by supervising and scheduling staff. Establishes a working lifeguard rotation.

Implement the Aquatic Department's Emergency Action Plan when needed, and act as first responder and point of contact/support for Lifeguard Staff. Direct and perform general pool maintenance and cleaning duties, including chemical testing, balancing, and monitoring the pump room area. Assists in managing Memory Square outdoor summer pool and the year round aquatics facility.

Enforces all City policies, pool rules, and regulations of the aquatics program. Keeps daily records on water chemistry, attendance, maintenance and current chemical inventories and all required routine maintenance. Provides customer service and conflict resolution in a friendly and professional manner.

Conducts routine safety checks of equipment and staff; prepares all essential paper work, records, and incident report forms. Performs rescues and administers First Aid during emergencies. Assists in maintenance (opening/closing) of Memory Square seasonal outdoor pool.

Performs additional duties as assigned. General Qualifications AQUATICS EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS: Minimum one (1) year experience as a lifeguard required. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, First Aid, CPR, AED required.

Water Safety Instructor or equivalent experience required. Previous experience assisting or leading In-Service trainings. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification and First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification required after 6 months.

CPO (Certified Pool Operator) or AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) certifications strongly preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of all aquatic programs. Excellent communication.

A desire to learn and grow as a member of the team. Must maintain required/current American Red Cross certification including CPR, AED, First Aid, Lifeguard Training, and Water Safety Instructor. Knowledge of City of Louisville policies and procedures as well as the Recreation Division's rules, policies and procedures.

Skills in staff supervision and public relations. Ability to supervise others and maintain a safe, health pool area. Ability to prevent accidents; remain calm in emergency situations.

The ability to work independently. Ability to analyze and correct facility safety hazards; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and supervisors. Basic understanding of pool operations and mechanics; including pool chemistry, back washing, and maintenance, or ability to learn.

Knowledge of pool layout and Lifeguard locations to supervise patrons. Additional Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance in and out of pool; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear.

Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs unassisted on a daily basis and occasionally safely lift 100 lbs with assistance. Must be able to safely extricate individuals of varying weight from pool with or without assistance at any given time. Must be able to react effectively to all potential mental, physical, and stressful situations inherent to the duties of a first responder.

Must have 20/20 vision or vision must be correctable with eyeglasses and/or contact lenses. Must be in good physical condition to swim 500 meters and retrieve a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the diving well. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job in an indoor and outdoor pool environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
