Aquarium Store Operations Lead

THE LOCAL FISH STORE

Morton Grove, IL

$22 - $26/hr

Full-time

Posted 24 days ago

Job description

The Local Fish Store is seeking an experienced, self-motivated individual to help oversee daily operations, livestock care, maintenance, and staff direction within one of the region's largest independent aquarium stores.

Our facility maintains more than 300 freshwater and saltwater aquarium displays and a large, constantly changing livestock inventory.

Aquarium experience is strongly preferred, but exceptional candidates with operations, leadership, animal care, horticulture, facilities, or specialty retail experience will also be considered.

We operate differently than most businesses. We maintain a lean management structure and place a high value on personal responsibility, initiative, and independent problem-solving. Employees who demonstrate these qualities are trusted with significant autonomy and compensated accordingly.

This is a hands-on leadership role in a live-animal retail environment, not a desk-based operations position.

Compensation:

$22–26/hour based on experience and performance.

This role is not heavily micromanaged. We are looking for someone who can identify problems, prioritize work, maintain standards, and take ownership of outcomes without requiring constant supervision.

Responsibilities include:

- Livestock care and husbandry

- Maintaining freshwater and saltwater systems

- Monitoring equipment and facility operations

- Prioritizing daily maintenance and operational tasks

- Assisting customers and supporting sales

- Directing and coordinating the work of other staff members when necessary

- Maintaining accountability and operational standards throughout the store

Successful candidates are able to:

- Remain productive without constant supervision

- Notice and address issues before they become emergencies

- Make sound decisions independently

- Hold themselves and others accountable to high standards

- Lead by example and help keep the operation running smoothly

This position is ideal for someone who naturally notices when something is wrong and feels compelled to address it.

To apply, please send a resume and a brief summary of your relevant experience.
