What is an Aqua Tech?

An Aqua Tech, short for Aquatic Technician, is a professional who specializes in the maintenance, monitoring, and management of aquatic environments such as aquariums, fish farms, water treatment facilities, or natural water bodies. Their responsibilities often include water quality testing, equipment maintenance, caring for aquatic life, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Aqua Techs may work in research, commercial, or recreational settings and often use specialized tools and techniques to keep aquatic systems healthy and functioning properly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Aqua Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aqua Tech, you need a solid understanding of water chemistry, filtration systems, and equipment maintenance, often supported by a relevant technical diploma or certifications like Certified Pool Operator (CPO). Familiarity with water testing kits, automated control systems, and various pool or aquatic facility management tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operation of aquatic facilities.

What are some common challenges Aqua Techs face when maintaining aquatic systems, and how can they be addressed?

Aqua Techs often encounter challenges such as balancing water chemistry, troubleshooting filtration systems, and detecting early signs of equipment failure or disease in aquatic life. These challenges can be addressed by staying up to date with regular maintenance routines, utilizing monitoring tools, and collaborating closely with biologists or facility managers. Proactive communication and continuous learning about new technologies and best practices are also key to maintaining healthy and efficient aquatic environments.

What is the difference between Aqua Tech vs Water Treatment Technician?

AspectAqua TechWater Treatment Technician
CertificationsOften requires EPA certifications, OSHA trainingRequires EPA certifications, state-specific licenses
Work EnvironmentIndustrial, commercial, or municipal water systemsMunicipal water plants, industrial facilities
Industry UsageWater treatment, aquaculture, environmental servicesMunicipal water supply, industrial water treatment

Both Aqua Tech and Water Treatment Technicians work in water-related industries, often requiring similar certifications and working in water treatment facilities. However, Aqua Tech roles may also include aquaculture or environmental sectors, while Water Treatment Technicians focus primarily on municipal and industrial water systems.

Job description

About Aqua Satellite

Aqua Satelliteโ€™s vision is to make ocean data accessible easily and inexpensively to industry and science. We will accomplish this with plentiful autonomous underwater vehicles capable of reaching anywhere in the ocean with a high degree of speed, endurance, and sensing capability. Key to our platform is integrating embodied intelligence and edge computation that enable safe navigation, high-resolution mapping, and scientific discoveries and breakthroughs. Aqua Satellite is based in Northern California, but will operate all over the world. We are a small team with keen interest in the ocean and the planet, learning by doing, and pushing the boundaries of technology.

Role Overview

As a Software Infrastructure Engineer at Aqua Satellite, you will build the software and infrastructure that powers a global fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles, enabling reliable operation from development through field deployment. You will architect scalable systems spanning CI/CD, simulation, cloud services, robotics tooling, and fleet management to accelerate development and improve mission performance. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you will develop production-grade software, support real-world testing, and translate operational feedback into robust engineering solutions. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex systems challenges, thrives in hands-on startup environments, and is excited to push the boundaries of autonomous ocean exploration.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and collaborate on infrastructure including Continuous Integration (CI), Software-in-loop (SIL), Hardware-in-loop (HIL), and deployment
  • Architect software systems for scalability, reliability, performance in field-deployed robots
  • Cloud-based infrastructure for command/control and automated data management of deployed AUV fleet
  • Develop critical tools for robot configuration and calibration, data management, visualization, and user interaction
  • Direct field experiments and testing for real-world feedback and verification

No candidate will be a perfect fit for every posted aspect of this role. If you meet some or many of the elements weโ€™ve captured here, we encourage you to apply! All applicants will have a diverse set of experiences and skills, and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to grow into this role as needed.

Required

  • B.S. at a minimum in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Experience building production-grade systems and deploying software on hardware or robotics products in the field
  • Willingness to participate in ocean testing

Desired

  • Early-stage startup experience
  • ROS2 experience
  • Proficient in C/C++, Python and development for Linux embedded systems
  • Browser and App-based UI development experience
  • Experience with containerized deployment (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with mobile robotics on land, sea and/or air
  • Exposure to best practices in MLOps
  • Experience with networking & distributed systems

30/60/90

In the first 30 days, you will:

  • Learn about the companyโ€™s roadmap and near-term goals
  • Support development, testing, and operation of the existing systems
  • Familiarize yourself with the teamโ€™s existing tools and pipelines

Within 60 days, you will:

  • Own the design and implementation of a key infrastructure or tooling improvement, such as enhancements to CI/CD, SIL/HIL workflows, deployment automation, or developer tooling.
  • Design and deliver software features that improve the scalability, reliability, or observability of field-deployed robotic systems.
  • Participate in field testing by deploying software updates, analyzing operational data, and incorporating real-world feedback into system improvements.

Within 90 days, you will:

  • Lead the architecture and delivery of a cross-functional software or infrastructure initiative that improves development velocity, deployment reliability, or fleet operations.
  • Deliver production-ready tools for robot configuration, calibration, visualization, or data management that are adopted in operation.
  • Drive improvements to software quality and release processes by expanding automated testing, CI/CD capabilities, and deployment best practices across the robotics stack.
  • Independently plan and execute field validation efforts, using insights from deployed systems to influence development roadmap decisions and improve robot performance.

This role is preferred on-site in Mountain View, but a hybrid work arrangement could be considered.

Benefits & Compensation

Aqua Satellite offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including unlimited paid time off, healthcare benefits, and a 401(k) plan with a company match.

Aqua Satellite is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
