Job description

Fitter Helper Apprentice / Trainee


Genesis is looking for motivated, dependable Fitter Helpers to join our clients team working on the shop floor. This role is ideal for an entry-level candidate or assistant who has basic mechanical skills and a strong desire to learn structural fitting and steel fabrication. You will collaborate directly with experienced Structural Welders/Fitters, assisting with material preparation, handling, layout, and learning how to read blueprints and fit up structural steel components.
Pay: $18/HR - $19/HR  Zip: 77064


Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday - 6 AM - 4:30 PM
  • Saturday 8 hours 6 AM - Done

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work side-by-side with Lead Fitters to position, align, clamp, and hold structural steel parts during assembly.
  • Operate grinders, torches, plasma cutters, and saws to clean, bevel, and prep edges for welding.
  • Safely move raw materials, finished components, and scrap across the shop floor using overhead cranes, forklifts, and pallet jacks.
  • Use tape measures, framing squares, levels, and soapstone to mark, verify dimensions, and lay out cut lines under supervision.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace; ensure all hand and power tools are properly maintained and stored.
  • Actively learn to read fabrication blueprints, interpret welding symbols, and master fit-up techniques for future advancement.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong desire to learn structural fit-up, print reading, and fabrication trade skills.
  • Familiarity with basic manual hand tools and power tools (e.g., angle grinders, drills, tape measures).
  • Must be able to read a standard tape measure
  • Exceptional punctuality, physical stamina, and a dependable attitude every day.
  • Commitment to wearing all required PPE (steel-toe boots, safety glasses, face shields, gloves) and strictly following shop safety rules.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a manufacturing, construction, or metal shop environment.
  • Basic understanding of tack welding or blueprint reading.
  • Experience operating sit-down forklifts or overhead cranes.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and perform repetitive heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) throughout an 8-hour shift.
  • Comfortable working in a non-climate-controlled shop environment.
