REDWOOD CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
CLASS TITLE: CUSTODIAN
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Operations Manager, perform routine cleaning and custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform routine custodial activities at assigned District site or plant.
Clean classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeteria, gymnasium, offices and related facilities.
Sweep, mop, scrub, wax and polish concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors, door panels and hand railings.
Wash windows and walls; clean chalkboards; move and arrange furniture and equipment in preparing classrooms/multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings.
Vacuum rugs and carpets; replace light bulbs and lighting tubes; clean venetian blinds, dust drapes and make minor, non-technical repairs as needed.
Raise and lower flag; lock and unlock doors and gates; set security system in assigned areas; maintain watering and irrigation schedule.
Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority; maintain security of building(s).
Pick up paper and debris; rake, sweep, water grounds, and clean walkways and entrances.
Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines; clean tables, chairs and floors after lunch periods.
Set up gymnasium and/or athletic equipment for classes and events as required.
Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills and clogged drains; respond to call backs in an emergency and where required.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance.
Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Modern cleaning methods, including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, black boards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
ABILITY TO:
Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards.
Learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
Maintain tools and equipment signed in clean working order and provide proper security.
Perform minor non-technical repairs.
Observe and report need for maintenance and repair. Perform heavy physical labor.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Meet schedules and time lines.
Communicate effectively with others.
Inspect and assure the security of facilities during assigned shift. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
