Apprentice Scaffolder information

What is an apprentice scaffolder?

Apprentice scaffolders are individuals who are learning the skills and knowledge required to build and dismantle scaffolding structures safely and efficiently. They typically work under the supervision of experienced scaffolders while completing formal training, such as an apprenticeship program. Their work involves assisting with assembling scaffolding components, following safety regulations, and developing an understanding of construction site procedures. Over time, apprentices gain hands-on experience and progress toward becoming qualified scaffolders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice scaffolder?

To thrive as an Apprentice Scaffolder, you need physical fitness, a basic understanding of construction safety, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with scaffolding systems, personal protective equipment (PPE), and certifications such as a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card are typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a willingness to follow instructions are critical soft skills in this role. These skills ensure scaffolding structures are assembled and dismantled safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by apprentice scaffolders during their training period?

Apprentice scaffolders often face challenges such as adapting to physically demanding work, mastering safety protocols, and learning to work efficiently at heights. Balancing hands-on tasks with classroom-based learning and certifications can also be demanding. However, working closely with experienced scaffolders and being part of a supportive team helps apprentices gain confidence and develop their skills over time. Open communication and a willingness to learn are key to overcoming these early challenges.

What is the difference between Apprentice Scaffolder vs Scaffolder?

Work EnvironmentAssisting with setup and dismantling under supervisionLeading scaffolding projects, supervising teams

The main difference between an Apprentice Scaffolder and a Scaffolder is experience and responsibility. Apprentices are in training, assisting with tasks under supervision, while Scaffolders are experienced professionals managing and executing scaffolding projects independently.

Can you get an apprenticeship in scaffolding?

Yes, aspiring scaffolding apprentices can typically start through vocational training programs, college courses, or by applying directly to construction companies that offer apprenticeships. These programs often include on-the-job training and may require a minimum age, physical fitness, and safety certifications such as a health and safety awareness course.

Do apprentice scaffolders get good money?

Apprentice scaffolders typically earn lower wages than fully qualified scaffolders, but their pay increases as they gain experience and certifications. Entry-level wages can vary depending on location and employer, with many apprentices earning between minimum wage and a moderate hourly rate during training. Over time, as skills develop, earnings generally improve significantly.

We’ve grown over 440% in the last 18 months because we take ownership, solve hard problems, and build with purpose. Join us to build the future.
Position Summary
The Apprentice role is an entry-level position designed to introduce individuals to data center construction and installation environments while providing broad foundational experience across field operations. Apprentices support both installation and electrical activities under supervision, learning core construction, safety, and trade fundamentals. After approximately two years in this role, apprentices may progress into a specialized trade path such as Electrical or Installation based on aptitude, performance, and business need.
Your Impact
As an Apprentice, you’ll support safe, high-quality construction and installation in our data center projects—helping skilled trades deliver on schedule while building your capabilities to grow into a specialized path.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Assist with general construction, assembly, and installation activities under supervision.
  • Support electricians and installers with staging, preparation, and material handling; collaborate closely with site supervisors and crew leads.
  • Perform basic tasks such as loading materials, handling tools, and maintaining clean, organized work areas.
  • Assist with installation of racks, containment systems, cabling pathways, and related components.
  • Support basic electrical tasks such as pulling wire and mounting boxes under supervision.
  • Operate hand tools and basic power tools safely and per instruction.
  • Follow all job site safety rules and immediately report unsafe conditions; participate in safety meetings and required training.
  • Learn to read and follow basic drawings and supervisor instructions to complete assigned tasks.
  • Travel to project sites and support flexible work schedules as required to meet project milestones.
  • Demonstrate reliability, teamwork, and willingness to learn multiple trades to support project execution.

Qualifications
  • 0–1 year of experience; no prior trade experience required (general labor or construction experience preferred).
  • Interest in developing a career in construction or electrical trades.
  • Strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in fast-paced construction environments; willingness to travel.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds; basic hand tool familiarity preferred.

Education / Certifications
  • High School diploma or GED required.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary and performance bonus (if applicable).
  • Paid time off.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • First time homebuyer program (if applicable, based on compensation).
  • Collaborative, high-energy workplace.

Our Core Values
  • Safety – We proactively protect our people and environment.
  • Inclusion – We respect and appreciate diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Speed – We move fast, act decisively, and stay agile.
  • Innovation – We challenge assumptions and simplify processes.
  • Judgment – We make sound decisions with the business in mind.
  • Accountability – We take ownership and deliver results.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Employees must be able to hear, speak, and communicate effectively. Work occurs in data center environments with potential exposure to electrical hazards, noise, and varying temperatures. Flexible hours, including nights and weekends, may be required. Physical requirements include bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead. Must lift at least 50 lbs, raise arms above shoulder level, and perform overhead work for extended periods. The ability to climb and carry ladders (up to 12 ft), navigate stairways, and work at heights up to 90 ft using ladders, scaffolds, or lifts is essential. Employees must access restricted areas (e.g., switchgear rooms, vaults, tunnels, crawl spaces) and wear full PPE. Good vision and hearing (normal or corrected) and accurate color identification are required. Some projects may lack food facilities, so bringing meals and snacks is necessary. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.
