Job description

Job Title and Description:
Pipe Layer / Pipe Fitter – Fire & Water LinesJob Summary:We are seeking an experienced Pipe Layer / Pipe Fitter to install underground fire lines and potable water systems for commercial and residential projects. This role is responsible for accurate pipe installation, alignment, and assembly, ensuring all work meets project specifications, safety standards, and inspection requirements. This is a skilled position with strong opportunities for advancement into leadman or foreman roles.Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Install underground fire lines and water mains (DIP, C900, PVC, CPVC, HDPE)
  • Set and align pipe to proper line and grade using string line, laser, or level
  • Install valves, fittings, hydrants, and restraints
  • Assemble pipe using mechanical joints, glued joints, push-on joints, flanged connections, or fusion (HDPE)
  • Ensure proper installation of thrust blocks and restraints
  • Work with operator to safely set pipe in trench
  • Perform or assist with hydrostatic pressure testing, flushing, and chlorination
  • Read and interpret utility plans, profiles, and specifications
  • Maintain proper trench safety practices (sloping, shoring, trench boxes)
  • Identify and correct alignment or grade issues before inspections
  • Train and guide helpers on proper installation techniques
Required Skills/Abilities: Required
  • 2+ years’ experience in underground utility installation (water/fire line preferred)
  • Strong understanding of pipe installation and alignment
  • Ability to read plans and follow grade stakes
  • Knowledge of trench safety practices
  • Ability to work in trenches and physically demanding conditions
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs. regularly
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
Preferred
  • Experience with hydrant and valve installation
  • Knowledge of hydrostatic testing and chlorination procedures
  • Experience with grade equipment
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
Education and Experience:
  • Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
  • On-the-job training may be provided
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Physical Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery.
  • Able to work long periods including evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • A current and valid US driver’s license is required.
