GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision of the Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services, this position assists and performs a variety of skilled field inspections and office work involved in the enforcement of adopted building codes and regulations regarding electrical installations. The duties include inspecting new construction, remodeling, repairs, reviewing plans and specifications to ensure compliance with the City codes and Cityโs electrical code.

The Inspector โ Electrical II exercises direct supervision over the Inspector โ Electrical Apprentice and Inspector โ Electrical I. The Inspector - Electrical III exercises direct supervision over the Inspector โ Electrical Apprentice/I/II.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Inspector - Electrical Apprentice
Assist in the inspection of residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations and equipment in structures undergoing construction, repair, or remodeling for compliance with City and National electrical codes and safety standards, issue appropriate permits.
Assist with the check of plans and specifications for compliance with current adopted City and National electrical codes.
Assist in the enforcement of the adopted City Electrical Code. Identify areas of non-compliance and discuss problems with homeowners and contractors/developers. Identify ways of correcting deficiencies.
Assist in the issuance of stop work orders.
Assist in the inspection of work sites to ensure that contractors and workers have appropriate licenses, and that proper materials and practices are utilized.
Assist in evaluating buildings considered for rehabilitation or demolition and assess electrical installations at the property ownerโs request to ensure compliance with code and life safety compliance.
Assist in the preparation of detailed inspection reports and review permit applications.
Receive telephone calls from contractors and homeowners.
Receive and process inspection requests.
Perform computer data entry.
Operate a city vehicle to travel to and from various job sites.ย
Inspector - Electrical I
Inspect residential, commercial, and industrial electrical installations and equipment in structures undergoing construction, repair, or remodeling for compliance with City and National electrical codes and safety standards.
Check plans and specifications for compliance with current adopted City and National electrical codes for residential.
Assist Inspector โ Electrical II in checking plans and codes for commercial projects.
Enforce adopted City Electrical Codes.
Issue stop work orders.
Inspect work sites to ensure that contractors and workers have appropriate licenses, and that proper materials and practices are utilized.
Prepare detailed inspection reports and review permit applications.
Write permits per approved applications.
Enter daily inspections into the building inspections software program.
Administer electrical exam for homeowners.
Provide site supervision of other Inspector โ Electrical employees in the absence of the Assistant Director of Planning and Development Services.
Inspector - Electrical II
Serve as an advisor to the Electrical Sub-Committee.
Assist the Assistant Building Official in determining approval for alternate methods and materials.
Inspector - Electrical III
Hold classes for stakeholders to educate new codes adopted by the city and inform of minor and major changes.
Assist the Assistant Building Official on researching current house bills and legislation that affect the construction industry in our area.
Investigate fire damage structures and assist the owner/contractor on repair requirements.
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Electrical construction and installation methods, practices, and materials.
Possible defects and faults in electrical construction and installation activities, standard testing devices, methods, and corrective measures.
National Electrical Code.
Skill to:
Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in electrical inspection work including ladder, screwdriver, voltage tester, and continuity tester, etc.
Organize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Safely operate a motor vehicle.
Operate office equipment to include computer, scanner, tablets, copier and smart phones and related software.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to:
Understand and interpret codes, plans, and specifications.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Inspector โ Electrical Apprentice
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience in electrical service installation work as an apprentice level electrician is required.
Education/Training:
High school diploma or GED is required.
License or Certificate:
A valid Texas driverโs license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
Obtain a Journeyman license through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) within twelve (12) months of employment is required.ย
Inspector - Electrical I
Experience:
One (1) year as an Inspector โ Electrical Apprentice is preferred.
A Journeyman license is required.
License or Certificate:
Obtain a Residential Inspectors Certification through the International Code Council (ICC) within twelve (12) months of employment as an Inspector โ Electrical I is required.
Inspector - Electrical II
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience with work comparable to the duties of Inspector - Electrical I in Building inspections with the City of Abilene is required.ย
License or Certificate:
A current Residential Inspectors Certification through the International Code Council (ICC) is required.
Obtain a Commercial Electrical Certification through the International Code Council (ICC) within twenty-four (24) months of employment as an Inspector โ Electrical II is required.ย

Experience:
Four (4) years of experience as anย Inspector - Electrical II to include two (2) years of experience in work comparable to the duties of Electrical Inspector II with the City of Abilene is required.ย
Education/Training:
Continued training through the International Code Council (ICC) to maintain all required certifications obtained for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) is required.
License or Certificate:
A current Commercial Electrical Inspectors Certification through the International Code Council (ICC) is required.
Obtain an Electrical Plans Examiner Certification from the International Code Council (ICC) within twenty-four (24) months of employment as an Inspector โ Electrical III is required.
