What is an apprentice gas?

Apprentice gas technicians are entry-level workers who assist and learn from experienced gas engineers or fitters. They help install, maintain, and repair gas appliances and systems under supervision while receiving on-the-job training. The apprenticeship typically involves both practical work and classroom-based learning, leading to recognized qualifications. This role is essential for gaining the skills and experience needed for a career in the gas industry.

What are some typical challenges an apprentice gas might face during their training period?

As an Apprentice Gas worker, you'll often encounter challenges such as mastering complex safety procedures, adapting to physically demanding tasks, and learning to use specialized tools and equipment. Working under supervision, you'll need to quickly absorb technical knowledge while ensuring all work complies with strict safety standards. Effective communication with more experienced technicians and the ability to work in various environments—sometimes outdoors or in confined spaces—are also key aspects of the apprenticeship experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice gas, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apprentice Gas Engineer, you need a basic understanding of mechanical principles, strong problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant qualification such as GCSEs in math and science. Familiarity with tools like pipe cutters, gas leak detectors, and training toward Gas Safe certification is commonly required. Attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help apprentices excel during hands-on training and customer interactions. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient work and building a foundation for progression in the gas engineering field.

Plumbing Apprentice (Residential Service)

Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of West Madison | Verona, WI Full-time, W-2 | $25.00 - $36.00 per hour base + commission

The short version

You are three, four, maybe five years into your apprenticeship. You can walk into a house, figure out what is wrong, fix it right, and talk to the homeowner like a professional. You are not a journeyman yet, and the paperwork knows it, but the work does not feel like it anymore.
We want you in your own truck.
Wisconsin lets a registered plumbing apprentice work under the general supervision of a licensed master plumber, which means our master does not have to stand next to you. So you will run your own calls, your own van, and your own day, with a master and a journeyman a phone call away when you want a second set of eyes. Everything Wisconsin plumbing code allows an apprentice to do, you will do.
We will also get you the rest of the way to your journeyman card.
Why us

Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is "The Punctual Plumber," a 200+ location national brand with the systems already figured out: Straight Forward Pricing, ServiceTitan dispatch, real training, and the Punctual Plumber Promise (if we are late, we pay the customer).
Our West Madison location is brand new. That means no inherited callbacks, no legacy drama, and no waiting behind six guys for a shot at lead tech. You get in at the start and grow as we grow.
Compensation

  • Base pay: $25.00 - $36.00 per hour, based on year in program and verified hours
  • Commission: yes!
  • Google review spiff: $10 per 5-star review that names you
  • Automatic raise at licensure. The day your Wisconsin Journeyman Plumber license is issued, you move to the journeyman pay scale. In writing, in your offer letter.
  • Realistic first-year earnings of $68,000 - $82,000 for a productive late-stage apprentice
Benefits and perks

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid sick time, vacation, and holidays
  • Brand new, fully stocked service van
  • Company iPad, dispatch and invoicing technology
  • Branded uniforms provided. Specialty and power tools provided beyond your personal hand tools
  • We pay for your related instruction, exam fees, and DSPS registration renewals
  • Stable, year-round residential work in a recession-resistant trade
What you'll do

  • Run your own service calls out of your own van, on the full scope of work Wisconsin allows a registered apprentice under general supervision of our master plumber
  • Diagnose and repair residential plumbing: leaks, drains, water heaters, fixtures, sewer lines, gas lines, sump and ejector pumps
  • Install and replace water heaters (tank and tankless), fixtures, water treatment, and repipe sections
  • Perform drain cleaning, de-scaling, hydro jetting, and camera inspections
  • Present good / better / best options using Straight Forward Pricing so the homeowner chooses with confidence before work begins
  • Test the work before you leave, every time, so we do not generate avoidable callbacks
  • Wear floor savers, keep the work area neat, and leave the home cleaner than you found it
  • Keep your ServiceTitan records accurate and your van clean inside and out
  • Log your hours toward your journeyman card and show up for your related instruction
  • Call your master or lead journeyman when a job is over your head. That is not a strike against you here. Guessing is.

What we're looking for

Required:

  • Active Wisconsin DSPS Plumbing Apprentice registration, or eligibility to register, with a current apprenticeship indenture under Wis. Stat. ch. 106 (Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards) or a federal DOL program
  • Roughly 4,000+ hours logged, meaning you are in year three or later of a five-year program
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license with an insurable driving record
  • Able to lift 50+ lbs, work in crawl spaces and attics, and pass a background check and drug screen
What actually gets you hired:

  • You can be dropped at an address alone and come back with the job done and the customer happy
  • Residential service experience, not just new construction rough-in
  • You can explain a repair to a homeowner without making them feel stupid
  • Comfortable on a tablet: dispatch software, digital invoicing, photos on the work order
  • You know the edge of your own ability and you say so out loud
Nice to have:

  • Hydro jetting and camera inspection experience
  • Water treatment or tankless certifications
  • Gas line experience

About your hours and your indenture

Your apprenticeship contract follows you, not your current shop. If you come to us, we work with the Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards to transfer your indenture, and your logged hours come with you. You do not restart. We are not interested in anyone burning three years of progress to take this job.
If you have real plumbing hours but were never formally indentured, tell us anyway. We will look at getting you registered and credited rather than throwing the application out.
The path from here

  1. You run a truck as a registered apprentice, under our master plumber, earning apprentice scale plus commission.
  2. We pay for your related instruction and keep your hours documented correctly.
  3. You finish your program, and we cover your DSPS application and Journeyman Plumber exam fees.
  4. License in hand, you move to journeyman pay the same pay period.
  5. From there: lead technician, then master track if that is where you want to go. We will pay for that too.

Ready to run your own truck before you have the card?
