ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS All applicants must be currently employed as a paid full-time professional (structural) firefighter and have: Minimum of two years verifiable work experience as a career firefighter/EMT at a single agency. Successful completion of probationary period with current Firefighter employer. Successful completion of a recognized full-time, career structural fire academy, as determined by the EFD Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC).

Current certification at the IFSAC or Pro Board FF-I, FF-II, and HazMat Awareness & Ops level. Possession of a current State of Washington certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT), and maintain such certification for the duration of employment. Excellent physical condition.

U.S. Citizenship, a lawful permanent resident, or deferred action for childhood arrivals recipients (DACA). Attainment of the age of 21 years by date of hire

Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a Washington State Driver License and maintain such license for the duration of employment. Possession of a current CPAT. Submission to a thorough background check; psychological, physical, and medical check; employment reference check; and verification of all applicable certifications.

Successfully complete and maintain Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) qualifications. New employees must participate in, and successfully complete, the requirements of the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC) program within 3 years of hire. All new hire firefighters are required to participate in the Respiratory Protection Program.

About the Job: This is general duty firefighting work performing emergency and non-emergency tasks in the areas of fire suppression, hazardous materials, technical rescue, fire prevention, emergency or disaster preparedness, as well as responding to emergency medical calls and performing skilled Basic Life Support (BLS).

The City of Everett employs six (6) Engine Companies (1 swing engine), two (2) Ladder Companies (1 swing ladder), three (3) ALS medic units, and three (3) BLS aid units. There are six (6) fire stations located throughout the city. There are 180 uniformed firefighters employed.

In 2025 the Department was dispatched to approximately 25,744 incidents with about 21,087 being EMS incidents. The ranked eligible register established from this examination process will be used to fill all vacancies in this job class until the register expires in 12 months or is depleted. In addition, entry into this classification through an open/continuous basis is subject to a twelve (12) month probationary period.

Successful candidates shall be subject to an extensive background to include a Washington State Patrol background inquiry pursuant to RCW 43.43.832. Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a CPAT, LEOFF medical evaluation, and medical history review, which includes drug testing, and a psychological evaluation is a condition of employment. All candidates will be required to attend a 2-week pre academy in Everett, WA, a 13-week Snohomish County Fire Training Academy located in Stanwood, WA, and a 6-week post academy located in Everett, WA

This job classification is represented by the Everett Firefighters Union, IAFF Local 46. Under the supervision of a Company Officer, Firefighters are responsible for responding to a variety of fire calls that involve firefighting, fire prevention, and emergency medical assistance. The work also involves responding to and dealing with manmade and natural disasters that pose a threat to public safety.

Incumbents often work in unpleasant, stressful, and hazardous conditions that generally require strenuous physical exertion for extended periods of time. Workplace hazards may also include emergency driving situations, exposure to chemicals, bloodborne and airborne pathogens, smoke, fumes, gases, extreme heat, working on ladders, and working in fire-induced weakened structures. Firefighters may also spend substantial amounts of time engaged in the routine inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of equipment, apparatus, and quarters, and in supervised firefighting, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or other related training.

The work is performed according to detailed oral and/or written instructions and to specified policies, procedures, and practices learned on the job. Work methods and results are subject to continual inspection for accuracy and conformance to established departmental policies, procedures, and certification requirements. Field performance reviews may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The work is performed under often physically demanding, stressful, and environmentally diverse conditions, and requires the ability to adjust quickly to changing priorities and demands.

Maintain physical condition necessary for running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping and lifting; work in inclement weather conditions; wear heavy protective equipment while working; handle stressful and emergency situations. Work in emergency and firefighting situations that may involve proximity to fire, dangerous persons and animals, hazardous emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in a near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters. Work shifts up to twenty-four (24) hours duration including night, weekend, holiday, and overtime hours.

EXAMINATION STEPS The Supplemental Questionnaire is part of the application (weighed 20%). Answers must be detailed and will be blind rated. A limited number of top-scoring applicants will be called to an in-person oral panel interview (weighted 80%), Tentative oral panel date will be the week of September 28th.

All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months. IMPORTANT NOTES A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register. The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities

Applicants claiming veterans' preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214 or other official military separation documentation that clearly indicates an honorable discharge from military service on or before the date filing closes. Extensive background checks will be conducted. Experienced Firefighter (Lateral) who are hired after March 12, 2026 who have had cumulative firefighter service will be placed in the classification range consistent with their total years of service as a firefighter

The step placement will be calculated upon their years of cumulative firefighter service, excluding any time in a part-time or volunteer status. The employee needs to provide the City with proof of the years of service as a firefighter. Upon review and approval by Human Resources and Fire Administration, the firefighter will be placed in the appropriate classification range upon hire.

The determination of step placement is not grievable. Qualified Experienced Firefighter candidates that have two years of professional full-time, paid, experience may begin employment at Step B of Range 04-117. Qualified Experienced Firefighter candidates that have more than three years of professional full-time, paid, experience may begin employment at Step C of Range 04-117.

Qualified Experienced Firefighter candidates that have more than three years of professional full-time, paid, experience and are JATC certified or equivalent as determined by the Local JATC Subcommittee, may begin employment at Step D of Range 04-117.
