Job Description:

SUMMARY:
The Finish Carpenter role constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using carpenter's hand tools and power tools, and conforming to local building codes. This position reports to the Carpenter Foreman and may take direction from the Project Superintendent and Trade Superintendent. Closely interacts with other trade persons. The primary focus of this role is finish work and installing doors and hardware.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans for informationpertaining to the type of material required.
  • Prepare layout, using rule, framing square, and calipers.
  • Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels, and planes.
  • Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them togetherwith nails, dowel pins, or glue.
  • Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter's level.
  • Erects framework for structures and lays sub-flooring.
  • Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinetwork.
  • Applies shock absorbing, sound deadening, and decorativepaneling to ceilings and walls.
  • Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks.
  • Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures aboveground level.
  • Fits and nails sheathing on outer walls and roofs of buildings.
  • Installs door and window bucks in designated positions in building framework, and braces them with boards, nailed to framework.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to coordinate the movements of eyes, hands, and fingers.
  • Must be able to climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffolding.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or work at heights as required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally more.
  • Must be able to use arms and hands to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects.
  • Must be able to follow specific directions.
  • Must be able stand or walk for long periods.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, percentages, and fractions.
  • Must be able to read and understand measuring tools and levels.
  • Must be able to compare and see differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.

Education and Experience:
Completion of an apprenticeship program or an equivalent 4 - 6 years of carpentry experience is required. High School diploma or GED.
