They typically combine on-the-job learning with classroom study, gaining hands-on experience under the supervision of experienced engineers. Apprentice Engineers can work in various engineering fields, such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering. This role helps them develop technical skills, industry knowledge, and professional competencies needed for a successful engineering career.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an apprentice engineer?

To thrive as an Apprentice Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of engineering principles, basic math and science skills, and a relevant high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with CAD software, engineering drawing tools, and sometimes basic programming or industry-specific certifications is often expected. Job description

Apprentice Electrician (2nd–4th Year)

Location: Manhattan, KS (Riley County)
Employment Type: Contract, full-time hours, 8+ week project engagement
Pay Rate: $22–$28/hr, DOE — conversion to direct hire available for top performers
Per Diem: $100/day

Position Overview
We are seeking experienced Apprentice Electricians to join active commercial and residential electrical crews operating in Manhattan, KS. This is a contract position — initial engagements are project-based, running 8 weeks or longer depending on scope. Top performers are eligible for conversion to direct hire. Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of verifiable hands-on electrical field experience and must be currently enrolled in or eligible to enroll in a DOL-registered or locally approved electrical apprenticeship program. Apprentices will work under the direct supervision of a licensed Journeyman or Master Electrician, contributing meaningfully to project production while accumulating the field hours and classroom instruction required for full licensure in Kansas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist journeyman and master electricians with all phases of electrical rough-in and trim work on commercial and residential projects
  • Install, bend, and support conduit systems — EMT, PVC, and rigid — under the direction of a licensed electrician
  • Pull wire and cable through conduit systems; assist with terminations and connections as directed
  • Install outlet boxes, junction boxes, pull boxes, conduit bodies, and panel rough-in as assigned
  • Assist with installation of lighting fixtures, switches, receptacles, panels, and service equipment during trim phases
  • Read and follow electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, and panel schedules under journeyman guidance
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area; stage materials and tools as directed
  • Operate hand tools and basic power tools safely; learn pneumatic and specialty electrical tools under supervision
  • Attend all required apprenticeship classroom sessions, trade school coursework, and on-site safety training
  • Participate in daily toolbox talks and site safety meetings; adhere to OSHA and site-specific safety protocols
  • Support material handling, deliveries, and site logistics as assigned by foreman or lead electrician
  • Accurately document and report hours worked on company letterhead for apprenticeship record-keeping purposes

Qualifications & Requirements

Required

  • Minimum age of 18 at time of hire
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2 years (approx. 4,000 hours) of verifiable hands-on electrical field experience — documented hours on company letterhead required for apprenticeship record-keeping
  • Currently enrolled in or actively pursuing enrollment in an approved electrical apprenticeship program
  • Willingness to register as an apprentice electrician with the applicable local licensing authority
  • Basic math skills, including algebra — ability to calculate measurements, angles, and conduit bends
  • Reliable transportation to job site; consistent attendance and punctuality are non-negotiable
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights, work in confined spaces, and perform physically demanding tasks in varying weather
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening

Preferred

  • Prior electrical, construction, or mechanical trade experience — even informal (shop class, maintenance, HVAC helper, etc.)
  • Completion of or current enrollment in an electrical technology program at KCKCC, MATC, or an equivalent trade school
  • Basic familiarity with hand tools, conduit, wire types, and NEC fundamentals
  • OSHA 10 – Construction certification, or willingness to obtain within the first 90 days
  • Prior enrollment in a DOL-registered apprenticeship program in any trade
