The Role
The Apprentice School is an educational and career opportunity unlike any other. The School provides high quality, comprehensive 4 and 8-year apprentice programs for students interested in shipbuilding careers. Since 1919, our programs have produced over 10,000 graduates in support of the operational needs of Newport News Shipbuilding. Every day, our more than 800 apprentices push new boundaries of achievement and explore new opportunities in a complex and challenging workplace. Building and maintaining nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the United States Navy that will defend our country for years to come is not only a rewarding experience but also an excellent opportunity for apprentices to learn about heavy manufacturing and construction in the most modern shipbuilding facility in the world.
Must Have
To be considered for admission to The Apprentice School, an applicant must have a high school diploma or GED with a minimum of four units passed with a "C" or better in the following subjects: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and at least one more qualifying course from the list below.

*Math Requirement:
If an applicant does not have a passing grade in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, they may meet this requirement by successfully completing (with C or better) one college-level, algebra-based math course at the level of Precalculus or higher, from an accredited college or university.

  • Must be able to work at extreme heights or small confined spaces.
  • Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. and must take and pass a respirator fit test.
  • Must be able to work indoors/outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to pass Physical Agility Test.
  • Must be able to perform overhead work.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
