Position Description
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Come and join the City of Fresno in achieving our mission of Building a Better Fresno!
Incumbents perform specialized work inspecting, installing, altering, adjusting, and maintaining heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (HVACR) and support equipment at City facilities. Air Conditioning Mechanics will also perform major overhauls, repairs to the equipment and are expected to provide lead direction when other maintenance personnel assist in the performance of HVACR work.
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Inspects and diagnoses, operates, maintains, repairs, installs and performs major overhauls to heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment, including but not limited to boilers, chillers, air handlers, air purifiers and scrubbers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, mixing boxes, furnaces, hot water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, ducting, control and chemical treatment systems, and similar equipment.

  • Estimates and submits requisitions for necessary labor, materials and equipment; maintains written and/or computerized records of City heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and related equipment.

  • Adjusts valves, gauges, thermostats, meters and other controls to insure optimum effectiveness.

  • May be assigned to specify, coordinate and inspect work performed by outside contractors.

  • May perform various semi-skilled and skilled tasks on plumbing, electrical and pneumatic equipment, carpentry, metal fabrication, doors, locks, painting and general maintenance work.

  • Performs related duties as required.

One vacancy exists in the Department of Public Utilities, Wastewater Management Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Completion of a state recognized accredited air conditioning/refrigeration mechanic apprenticeship program (please upload certification for apprenticeship program).
-AND-
(1) One year of journey-level experience maintaining and repairing Commercial and/or Industrial refrigeration, heating and related equipment, or a combination of education and/or additional work experience in this trade will be substituted for the apprenticeship program on a year-for-year basis.
Must possess at time of application a valid "Universal" technician certificate issued by a United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved certification program, as required by Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act and maintain this valid certificate for the entire term of employment in this class. NOTE: Applicants must attach to their employment application their Universal technician certificate number and expiration date.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno. Eligibles certified for consideration to the Airports Department must successfully complete a polygraph test, or computer voice stress analyzer test, an extensive background investigation, and a department interview prior to employment.
THE EXAMINATION PROCESS
The examination process may consist of the following:
Written Exam 100%: A job-related written examination may be administered which may test a candidate's knowledge in the following areas: terminology, operation, and maintenance and repair of heating ventilation and air conditioning units, water supply, pumps and wells, tools and safety, water mains and services, public relations, interpersonal skills, mathematics, and reading comprehension. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The Written Examination date is to be determined.
VETERAN PREFERENCE REGULATIONS
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
