Excelsior University is growing—and we’re making a meaningful investment in education and workforce development in the St. Petersburg, Florida community. As we expand our hybrid learning model, we are seeking a Department Chair to provide leadership for our Computer Technology programs in information technology, cybersecurity, and computer science. 

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of applied technology education while supporting faculty and programs that serve adult learners developing real-world, career-ready skills. 

Position Overview  

The Department Chair for Computer Technology provides academic and operational leadership to support programs, faculty, and students within the department. 

This role is designed for an experienced faculty leader with expertise in online and hybrid instruction, academic operations, and a strong student-centered approach. The Chair works closely with the Associate Dean and School of Technology leadership to oversee faculty engagement, course quality, and program operations. As a member of the faculty, this role has teaching responsibilities commensurate with the scale and scope of the size of the department. 

The position combines academic instruction, leadership, faculty support, and program coordination to ensure excellence and consistency across Computer Technology offerings. 

Key Responsibilities 

Department Leadership and Operations 

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and liaison for Computer Technology faculty 
  • Oversee term-based operations, including course scheduling, faculty assignments, and textbook coordination 
  • Support faculty onboarding, training, and communication to ensure instructional quality and consistency 
  • Participate in departmental, school-level, and university initiatives, committees, and special projects 

Program Quality & Curriculum Oversight 

  • Monitor course quality and coordinate updates and improvements in collaboration with Instructional Design and Development (IDD) 
  • Support course development, revisions, and alignment with program outcomes and workforce needs  
  • Contribute to program review, assessment reporting, and continuous improvement efforts    
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and accreditation standards 

Faculty Support & Student Success 

  • Guide faculty in delivering high-quality online and hybrid instruction aligned with University standards  
  • Track and analyze key performance indicators, including course evaluations, grading patterns, and student success metrics   
  • Promote effective teaching practices that support engagement, retention, and academic success among adult learners   

Faculty Responsibilities 

  • Teaching responsibilities within university-established workload model 
  • Maintain a scholarly agenda in alignment with university and college and strategic priorities 
  • Engage department faculty in university and community service activities as appropriate 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a closely related field 
  • Professional experience in a relevant technical field, with industry certifications preferred 
  • Minimum of 5 years of higher education teaching experience 
  • Progressive administrative experience 
  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Prior leadership or administrative experience in higher education 
  • Demonstrated experience in online and/or hybrid instructional environments 
  • Experience with course development, assessment, and accreditation processes 
  • Strong track record of promoting student success using evidence-based decision-making to support the quality improvement of academic programs, curriculum, and faculty.    
  • Demonstrated experience with the recruitment, selection, evaluation, development, and mentoring of faculty 
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in curriculum and faculty support

Work Environment 
This position operates in a hybrid environment, requiring a combination of on-site work at the St. Petersburg location and remote operation. The role includes regular virtual collaboration and presence to support faculty, labs, and program operations, occasional travel to Albany, NY, for planning, training, and program-related activities. 

The hiring salary range for this position is $97,500 - $107,000. The hiring salary range above represents the University's good faith estimate at the time of posting.
