CHL Systems is seeking an Applications Engineer II to play a critical role in the early stage of project development by translating customer operational needs into practical, executable system solutions.
This position serves as a technical bridge between customers, Sales, and Engineering by developing process concepts, system layouts, equipment selections, and technical scopes that guide successful project execution. The role focuses on evaluating industrial processes and defining integrated material handling and automation solutions that align with customer requirements and CHL’s capabilities.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, experience working with industrial systems, and the ability to balance feasibility, cost, risk, and performance when developing solutions.

What You’ll Do
Customer amp; Process Evaluation
  • Evaluate customer needs, plant operations, and production processes to define system requirements
  • Gather facility, product flow, process, and equipment data to support solution development
  • Participate in customer site visits, technical discussions, and project discovery conversations
  • Develop a clear understanding of operational constraints, goals, performance expectations, and project requirements
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders
Solution Development amp; Application Engineering
  • Develop conceptual system solutions that meet customer requirements and business objectives
  • Select appropriate equipment and technologies based on process conditions, product flow, facility layout, and plant environment
  • Create system layouts and space integration concepts using AutoCAD or similar tools
  • Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to gather technical input, equipment details, and budgetary information
  • Work with Estimating to develop cost models, project budgets, and proposal support information
  • Define and document technical scope of work for proposed solutions
  • Prepare technical descriptions, solution narratives, and supporting documentation for proposals and quoting
  • Ensure proposed solutions are practical, feasible, and aligned with CHL’s capabilities
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Act as the technical bridge between customers, Sales, Engineering, Estimating, and Operations teams
  • Support Sales in evaluating project feasibility, solution strategy, technical positioning, and customer requirements
  • Collaborate with Engineering to ensure concepts transition effectively into detailed design
  • Partner with Project Management, Manufacturing, and Installation teams to support project execution
  • Lead technical handoff from proposal stage into formal engineering and project execution
  • Clearly define and communicate technical risks, assumptions, requirements, and scope details
Strategic amp; Sales Support
  • Support Sales during customer presentations, technical discussions, and solution reviews
  • Assist in evaluating project opportunities, technical risks, solution strategies, and business fit
  • Contribute to long-term customer relationship development and repeat business opportunities
  • Support positioning of CHL’s technical capabilities in the market
  • Help determine solution competitiveness and alignment with business objectives
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in applications engineering, system integration, process engineering, plant engineering, or a similar technical role
  • Experience working with industrial equipment, plant-level systems, manufacturing environments, or custom automation solutions
  • Ability to translate customer operational needs into practical technical concepts and system solutions
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and customer requirements in a fast-paced environment
Technical Skills amp; Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of industrial equipment, plant operations, process flow, and integrated systems
  • Experience with system layouts, equipment selection, solution development, and technical scope definition
  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical integration, and automation environments
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar 2D layout tools required; 3D CAD experience such as SolidWorks preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, P amp;IDs, process flow diagrams, equipment specifications, and customer requirements
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations, cost evaluations, and technical trade-off analysis
  • Familiarity with material handling, conveying, processing, or automation systems preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams
