As an Application Engineering Specialist on the RSEC Ontario team, you will support Armstrong's mission by analyzing project requirements, developing optimized system solutions, and working closely with sales representatives to deliver technical value to customers. You will play an essential role in improving energy efficiency, aligning product selection with application needs, and enabling success across commercial and institutional HVAC projects in Ontario.


Key Accountabilities

Application Engineering & Technical Design Support

  • Review HVAC design drawings, mechanical plans, and specifications to develop advanced hydronic system solutions using Armstrong's portfolio.
  • Interpret and analyze control schematics, plumbing layouts, and P&ID diagrams to ensure optimal product selection and system integration.
  • Support engineering firms and rep partners with system optimization recommendations (e.g., primary-secondary, variable flow, decoupled systems).
  • Contribute technical insight on pump control strategies, delta-T optimization, sensor placement, and operating cost improvement.
  • Ensure designs meet client requirements while enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability outcomes.
  • Prepare technical documentation  and Proposals for Armstrong’s Offerings


Field Support & Sales Enablement

  • Participate in site walk-throughs, customer meetings, and design reviews alongside Armstrong sales personnel.
  • Deliver technical presentations and walkback sessions to communicate Armstrong's value proposition to consulting engineers and contractors.
  • Clarify complex system interactions and explain how Armstrong products integrate into various types of HVAC system architectures.
  • Translate field data and project requirements into actionable design strategies and technical proposals.


Technical Support & Process Integration

  • Use Armstrong’s selection tools to generate technically sound proposals, energy models, and quotations.
  • Assist the Territory Lead in reviewing CRM opportunities, validating sizing, controls compatibility, and application viability.
  • Ensure accurate configuration and documentation of proposed systems based on customer specifications and field conditions.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering when custom application reviews or edge-case analysis are needed.


Cross-Functional Collaboration & Contribution

  • Participate in RSEC team discussions and alignment meetings across the Americas.
  • Support special technical projects as assigned by management.
  • Maintain a proactive mindset, striving for increased business agility, faster response times, and enhanced service quality.
  • Collaborate on the creation and refinement of internal technical materials, FAQs, and best-practice guides.


What We're Looking For

Education and Experience

  • College diploma or university degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in manufacturing or mechanical systems design, with a strong focus on HVAC in Hydronics and Plumbing applications.
  • Minimum of 1 year in a customer-oriented technical role, such as internal sales engineering, technical field service, or application support.
  • Experience interpreting mechanical drawings, control schematics, and hydronic system documentation is essential.


Technical Skills

  • Strong ability to read and analyze control schematics, plumbing risers, and hydronic layouts.
  • Solid understanding of District Energy application, central plant systems, including variable-speed pumping, thermal storage, heat exchangers, and control loops.
  • Familiarity with HVAC energy strategies (i.e., ASHRAE 36) such as reset schedules, delta-T management, and decoupling techniques.
  • Proficient in using selection software tools and Microsoft Office; CRM and quoting platforms experience is a plus.


Soft Skills

  • Technically articulate with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently on complex engineering problems while also contributing to cross-functional teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and project follow-through.
