What is application performance monitoring?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) refers to the process of tracking and managing the performance and availability of software applications. APM tools help organizations detect, diagnose, and resolve issues that can affect the user experience, such as slow response times or application crashes. By monitoring key metrics like response time, error rates, and resource usage, APM solutions enable IT teams to proactively address performance problems and ensure applications run smoothly. This is essential for maintaining high levels of user satisfaction and meeting business goals.

How does an application performance monitoring specialist typically collaborate with development and operations teams to resolve performance issues?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) specialists play a key role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams. They monitor application health, analyze data from APM tools, and proactively identify performance bottlenecks. When issues arise, they work closely with developers to pinpoint code-level problems and with operations to address infrastructure-related concerns, often facilitating cross-team meetings to ensure rapid resolution. This collaborative approach is essential for maintaining optimal application performance and delivering a seamless user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in application performance monitoring, and why are they important?

To excel in Application Performance Monitoring (APM), you need a solid understanding of software development, network infrastructure, and performance analytics, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with APM tools like New Relic, AppDynamics, or Dynatrace, as well as experience with logging, tracing, and monitoring systems, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals quickly diagnose issues and collaborate with development teams. These capabilities are essential to ensure optimal application performance, minimize downtime, and deliver a seamless user experience.

What is the difference between Application Performance Monitoring vs Software Developer?

AspectApplication Performance MonitoringSoftware Developer

Job description

Are you ready for what’s next? Come explore opportunities within Brunswick, a global marine leader committed to challenging conventions and innovating next-generation technologies that transform experiences on the water and beyond. Brunswick believes “Next Never Rests™,” and we offer a variety of exciting careers and growth opportunities within united teams defining the future of marine recreation.

Summary: We’re seeking an experienced Enterprise Applications Architect to lead the transformation of our digital landscape. In this pivotal role, you’ll shape the architecture of mission‑critical platforms, drive innovation across business domains, and ensure seamless integration of cloud, on‑premise, and hybrid solutions. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast‑paced environment, enjoys solving complex challenges, and excels at aligning technology with business goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design architecture blueprints aligning enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, SaaS, packaged solutions, legacy custom applications) with business capabilities, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and strategic alignment across modern and legacy systems.
  • Map business capabilities (e.g., financial management, customer engagement, supply chain) to enterprise and legacy custom applications, ensuring optimal support for core processes and business value.
  • Define enterprise integration strategy across ERP/CRM/SaaS and legacy platforms, standardizing patterns for API‑led connectivity, event‑driven integration, and service orchestration.
  • Design and govern APIs including API lifecycle management, versioning, documentation standards, and developer onboarding/enablement.
  • Create and maintain an integration reference architecture (sync vs async patterns, batch vs real‑time, integration anti‑patterns), reducing duplication and improving interoperability.
  • Oversee integration modernization for legacy systems (wrapping with APIs, strangler patterns), reducing point‑to‑point dependencies and improving maintainability.
  • Develop and enforce architecture standards, best practices, and reference architectures for enterprise and legacy custom applications, ensuring compliance, security, and consistency across the portfolio.
  • Support project solution architecture deliverables by leading and designing the enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, SaaS, packaged solutions, mobile, web, legacy custom applications) sections of the overall architecture blueprint for each project.
  • Collaborate with Integration Architect and develop solutions to seamless integration of enterprise applications, including legacy custom‑developed systems, across on‑premises and multi‑cloud environments, using APIs, middleware, and service‑oriented architectures for interoperability.
  • Assess and select platforms, tools, and packaged integration solutions (connectors), incorporating industry standards and best practices to optimize functionality and compatibility with existing architectures.
  • Lead modernization of legacy custom applications, cloud migrations, and upgrades of enterprise applications, ensuring alignment with mapped business capabilities and organizational goals.
  • Partner with business leaders, vendors, and legacy system teams to define capability requirements, translate them into technical solutions, and validate application mappings for alignment.
  • Mitigate risks related to application performance, security vulnerabilities, and integration challenges in legacy custom and modern systems, ensuring reliable operations.
  • Monitor and optimize enterprise and legacy custom applications for scalability, performance, and cost‑effectiveness, addressing technical debt and ensuring business alignment.
  • Document enterprise applications architectures, capability mappings, and integration strategies for enterprise and legacy custom applications, guiding teams on implementation, configuration, and maintenance.
Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in enterprise application architecture or related roles.
  • Demonstrated success in leading large‑scale application modernization or digital transformation initiatives.
  • Experience working across multiple business domains (e.g., HR, Finance, Supply Chain).
  • Hands‑on experience with enterprise platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow.
  • Experience architecting solutions with enterprise platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Workday, ServiceNow and other large packed applications.
  • Track record of mentoring technical teams and influencing cross‑functional stakeholders.
Skills
  • Proven ability to design and implement enterprise‑wide application architecture strategies.
  • Strong proficiency in cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) and hybrid environments.
  • Expertise in integration technologies (e.g., APIs, ESB, microservices).
  • Advanced understanding of data modeling, database design, and data governance.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Experience with Agile and DevOps methodologies.
Knowledge
  • Deep understanding of enterprise application ecosystems including ERP, CRM, HCM, and custom applications.
  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF, Zachman).
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Understanding of business process modeling and optimization.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies such as AI/ML, IoT, and blockchain in enterprise contexts.

The anticipated pay range for this position is $132,500 - $196,000 annually. The actual base pay offered will vary depending on multiple factors including job‑related knowledge/skills, relevant experience, business needs, and geographic location. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
