What is application performance monitoring?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) refers to the process of tracking and managing the performance and availability of software applications. APM tools help organizations detect, diagnose, and resolve issues that can affect the user experience, such as slow response times or application crashes. By monitoring key metrics like response time, error rates, and resource usage, APM solutions enable IT teams to proactively address performance problems and ensure applications run smoothly. This is essential for maintaining high levels of user satisfaction and meeting business goals.

How does an application performance monitoring specialist typically collaborate with development and operations teams to resolve performance issues?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) specialists play a key role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams. They monitor application health, analyze data from APM tools, and proactively identify performance bottlenecks. When issues arise, they work closely with developers to pinpoint code-level problems and with operations to address infrastructure-related concerns, often facilitating cross-team meetings to ensure rapid resolution. This collaborative approach is essential for maintaining optimal application performance and delivering a seamless user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in application performance monitoring, and why are they important?

To excel in Application Performance Monitoring (APM), you need a solid understanding of software development, network infrastructure, and performance analytics, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with APM tools like New Relic, AppDynamics, or Dynatrace, as well as experience with logging, tracing, and monitoring systems, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals quickly diagnose issues and collaborate with development teams. These capabilities are essential to ensure optimal application performance, minimize downtime, and deliver a seamless user experience.

What is the difference between Application Performance Monitoring vs Software Developer?

Primary FocusMonitoring and optimizing application performance and user experienceDesigning, coding, and maintaining software applications
Required SkillsPerformance analysis, troubleshooting, monitoring toolsProgramming languages, software design, problem-solving
Work EnvironmentIT teams, operations, DevOpsDevelopment teams, coding environments
CertificationsAPM tools certifications, ITIL, cloud certificationsProgramming certifications, computer science degrees

Application Performance Monitoring professionals focus on ensuring applications run smoothly by tracking performance metrics, while Software Developers create and improve the software itself. Both roles are essential in the software lifecycle but serve different functions within the tech industry.

How do you monitor application performance as an Application Performance Monitoring professional?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) professionals use tools like New Relic, Dynatrace, or AppDynamics to track metrics such as response times, error rates, and throughput. They analyze logs, set alerts for anomalies, and utilize dashboards to identify and resolve performance issues in real-time, often integrating with development and operations teams for continuous improvement.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mobile Application Developer to help design, build, and maintain a next generation proprietary mobile application platform within the financial services industry.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands on mobile application development experience across both iOS and Android, with particular emphasis on React Native, Java, Swift, and Objective C. We are looking for someone who understands the complete mobile application lifecycle and has personally participated in taking applications from development through production release and ongoing support.

This is not a position for someone whose mobile experience has been limited to contributing to isolated portions of an application. The successful candidate will have experience owning meaningful features and functionality throughout the development lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, testing, release, monitoring, and continued improvement.

The current mobile environment utilizes a React Native frontend supported by a modern microservices architecture. You will work closely with product owners, backend engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver a polished, secure, and reliable experience for users.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high quality mobile applications across both iOS and Android using React Native, with native development as needed.

• Translate product requirements and UX designs into clean, maintainable, well tested code.

• Own mobile features throughout the complete lifecycle, including architecture, development, code review, testing, production release, monitoring, and ongoing enhancements.

• Participate directly in application launches and releases through the Apple App Store and Google Play.

• Collaborate with backend engineers to integrate APIs and shared services, including GraphQL APIs.

• Optimize applications for performance, responsiveness, offline behavior, battery usage, and memory efficiency.

• Implement appropriate mobile security, authentication, secure storage, and data handling practices within a regulated financial services environment.

• Participate in code reviews and technical design discussions.

• Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to ongoing application stability and performance.

• Help continuously improve mobile development, testing, deployment, and engineering practices.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional mobile application development experience.

• Strong professional experience developing applications across both iOS and Android.

• Hands on experience with React Native.

• Experience with Java, Swift, and Objective C in a mobile development environment.

• Demonstrated experience taking mobile applications through the complete development lifecycle and into production.

• Direct experience with mobile application release processes, including Apple App Store and Google Play.

• Strong understanding of mobile architecture patterns, state management, and API integration.

• Experience integrating mobile applications with REST APIs. GraphQL experience is highly desirable.

• Understanding of mobile authentication, secure storage, analytics, crash reporting, accessibility, and application security.

• Experience with Git and CI/CD pipelines for mobile applications.

• Experience writing unit and integration tests and maintaining code quality within a collaborative development environment.

• Strong problem solving skills with the ability to independently own features from initial development through production.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing applications within fintech, wealth management, financial services, or another regulated or security sensitive environment.

• GraphQL experience.

• Experience working with microservices based backend architectures.

• Knowledge of mobile security best practices, including authentication flows, secure storage, and encryption of data in transit and at rest.

• Experience with automated mobile testing frameworks and application performance monitoring tools.

• Experience working in an Agile development environment with product owners, backend engineers, and cross functional stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits

• $107,000 to $122,000 base salary plus bonus.
