Job description


The Epic Beaker Application Manager provides day-to-day management for Quest Diagnostics' Epic Beaker application, ensuring that laboratory information system fully supports the company's clinical, operational, and financial goals. This pivotal leadership role is responsible for guiding the team that operationalizes our most critical laboratory systems. Reporting up through the Epic Beaker Executive Director this manager will be the direct interface between strategic business needs and technical delivery. The core focus will be on maximizing team performance, ensuring the quality and integrity of all system builds, and delivering an optimized, high-quality experience for every patient, provider, and partner interacting with our Clinical Pathology workflows and integration points. Application Manager drives continuous improvement in quality, compliance, and efficiency across the order-to-cash laboratory value chain, collaborating with enterprise IT, laboratory operations, and revenue-cycle leadership to deliver a seamless experience.
Responsibilities
  • Lead, motivate, manage a high-performing team of Epic Beaker Analysts (Levels 1-4).
  • Set clear goals, accountability metrics and provide feedback to coach and develop technical and leadership capabilities within the team
  • Promote a learning culture focused on maintaining Epic certifications, continuous skill growth, and active participation in training programs
  • Responsible for performance reviews, define individual development plans, manage capacity planning, and actively cultivate the pipeline for future Beaker leadership and specialized expertise.
  • Oversee the team's backlog and project portfolio, ensuring all configuration, optimization, and integration efforts are prioritized and executed with precision and adherence to established timelines.
  • Ensure team builds and configures the system with streamlined workflows that deliver optimal experience for patients, providers and employees
  • Partner with stakeholders to ensure Beaker remains scalable, secure, and aligned with enterprise technology goals
  • Effectively manage change initiatives, minimizing disruption and maximizing adoption
  • Ability to standardize conversions and improve uniformity across systems
  • Define measurable success criteria -accuracy, turnaround time, billing integrity, and user satisfaction, track performance, and make data driven improvements
  • Lead the Beaker program portfolio, including new implementations, upgrades, optimization initiatives, and integration projects
  • Establish and enforce configuration governance, change-management standards, and documentation policies
  • Coordinate with Epic, vendors, and internal stakeholders to prioritize enhancements and manage issue resolution
  • Ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, SOX, and Quest internal audit standards
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to maintain end-to-end interoperability and data integrity
  • Communicate system performance, risks, and priorities to stakeholders and translate complex issues into clear, actionable insights
  • Maintain strict quality assurance standards over all Beaker configurations related to clinical pathology.
  • Review and approve complex system builds (e.g., test compendia, result structures, interfaces) to guarantee data accuracy, regulatory compliance, and system stability across the high-volume reference lab environment.
  • Develop and manage the Beaker program budget, including staffing, maintenance, and capital investment planning
  • Drive cost optimization through process automation, standardization, and efficient use of Epic features
  • Troubleshoots complex problems and performs root cause analysis for process improvements
  • Ensure timely delivery of projects and sustainable return on technology investments
  • Assess application enhancement requests to ensure alignment with Epic foundation standards, promoting simple, scalable workflows that improve patient care while advancing Quest's competitive position

Qualifications
Required Work Experience:
  • 10 + years of progressive experience in Epic Beaker or comparable LIS leadership, including
  • 5 + years managing teams or large initiatives
  • Demonstrated success overseeing multi-site or enterprise-level Epic Beaker implementations or optimizations
  • Experience with healthcare mergers and acquisitions
  • Deep understanding of laboratory operations and order-to-cash workflows, including billing integration and instrument connectivity
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Strong program-management skills with expertise in governance, risk management, and change control
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills

Preferred Work Experience:
  • Experience in national reference-lab, academic-medical-center, or large integrated-delivery-network environments
  • Exposure to enterprise data analytics, automation, or cloud-based laboratory systems
  • Background in continuous-improvement methodologies eg Lean Six Sigma, ITIL, Agile
  • Cross-certification in other Epic modules eg Orders, Bridges, Resolute

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Work requires handling light and simple weight material and equipment. Visual activity requires the ability to tolerate prolonged periods of close computer screens. Work requires speed, accuracy and adeptness to operate in system application. Fast-paced work environment. After hours, weekend and holiday work will occasionally be required as determined by the Beaker Leader to support software/hardware patches, upgrades, downtimes and potential disasters.

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, medical technology or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Epic Beaker CP and AP certification
  • Project management or process improvement certification
  • Up to 25% travel
  • Leadership experience managing teams of 30+ Analysts with supervisory layers
  • English Required

Preferred:
  • Additional Epic certifications (Bridges, Resolute, Prelude, Cadence etc).
