What is an application manager?

An application manager is an information technology (IT) professional who identifies and implements software solutions to optimize business operations. As an application manager, your responsibilities involve the procurement, installation, configuration, and maintenance of software applications. Your duties include creating processes and protocols for software systems, managing server and computer upgrades, and troubleshooting problems. You collaborate with business analysts to ensure that the software solutions you manage align with the company’s operational goals and help produce desirable business outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an application manager?

To thrive as an Application Manager, you need a solid background in software development, IT project management, and a relevant degree such as computer science or information systems. Familiarity with application lifecycle management tools, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, and certifications like ITIL or PMP are often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help in managing teams and collaborating with stakeholders. These abilities ensure smooth application performance, effective project delivery, and alignment with business objectives.

Application Managers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between development, IT operations, and business stakeholders. They coordinate software deployments, manage updates, and ensure applications meet performance and security standards. Regular collaboration with developers helps address technical issues, while working with IT operations ensures smooth application functionality and uptime. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as Application Managers often lead cross-functional meetings and troubleshooting sessions.

The Impact You'll Make

Would you like to apply your engineering expertise to help customers design their machines? Then you might be interested in joining our System Application Engineering (SAE) team at Danfoss Power Solutions (DPS). We are a world-class provider of mobile hydraulics, power electronic controls and electric machine systems serving the construction, agriculture and other off-highway vehicle markets.

What Danfoss offers you

At Danfoss, you will help enable the acceleration of future-focused solution frameworks through the strategic orchestration of technical alignment activities across evolving value streams. As a System Application Engineer, you will drive synergistic engagement within a dynamic ecosystem of stakeholders, capabilities, and outcome-oriented initiatives, ensuring the effective coordination of cross-functional priorities while advancing scalable pathways for sustainable operational readiness. Through the proactive facilitation of transformational objectives and continuous optimization of solution-enablement processes, you will contribute to the successful realization of next-generation opportunities across the broader machine innovation landscape.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your typical day will include

  • Developing advanced machine expertise through structured observation of equipment behavior before, during, and after expected behavior occurs.
  • Collaborating with customers to define, refine, and periodically redefine machine requirements after the machine has already been designed.
  • Evaluating hydraulic system performance by correlating pressure data, operator feedback, weather conditions, and the color of the machine.
  • Creating technical recommendations that balance customer expectations, engineering reality, and historical decisions that nobody can explain.
  • Lead multidisciplinary efforts to enhance machine-level synergistic performance through the strategic alignment of subsystem interoperability objectives.
  • Responsible for ensuring machine solutions achieve optimal operational harmonization across hydraulic, electronic, mechanical, and conceptual domains.
  • Analyzing performance trends to distinguish normal variation from unusual variation and unusually normal variation.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) preferred in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a related discipline involving the management of complex interconnected systems and their associated outcomes.
  • 1 or more years of relevant experience required, or equivalent exposure to professional environments where relevant experience was actively discussed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate technical concepts, strategic concepts, and the technical strategy behind conceptual communication.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink and/or other modeling platforms used to simulate real-world behavior, expected behavior, and behavior that may become relevant in future operating conditions.
  • Experience conducting machine testing, validation activities, and structured observations of machine performance under both controlled and uncontrolled levels of control.
  • Technical writing experience preferred, including the ability to create clear, actionable documentation that accurately reflects the current understanding of previously documented information.
What You’ll Get from Us
  • We promote from within and support your learning with mentoring, training, and access to global opportunities.
  • You’ll have flexibility, autonomy, and support to do your best work while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Your well-being matters to us.
  • We strive to create an inclusive work environment where people of all backgrounds are respected, and valued for who they are.
  • You’ll receive benefits like an annual bonus, paid vacation, personal insurance, and more. These vary by country and contract, but they’re worth asking about—we think they’re pretty great.
