Job description

The City of Topeka's Information Technology department is seeking a motivated Help Desk Technician to join its team. This position serves as a trusted resource for employees across the organization, providing direct support, technical assistance and guidance to resolve issues and ensure users have the tools needed to remain productive.
This position is responsible for the provisioning, maintenance, and support of PCs, mobile devices, and related equipment; it also supports Microsoft Windows operating systems, the Microsoft Office Suite, and a range of desktop applications.
Additionally, this position works closely with network engineers, application and software support teams, telecommunications specialists, and structured cabling technicians to ensure seamless IT operations.
What you'll do:
  • Respond to and process requests obtained through the IT service desk system.
  • Install, configure and support desktop, laptop, mobile devices, printers, and other systems.
  • Install, configure and support PC and mobile operating systems, desktop applications and software systems.
  • Participate in asset management lifecycle inventory activities for assets in the IT service desk system.

The ideal candidate:
  • Has excellent customer service skills.
  • Is a skilled multi-tasker with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Has the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.

Minimum qualifications:
  • Associate's degree or graduation from a vocational school in a field applicable to the Information Technology field is preferred.
    • With an Associate's degree or graduation from a vocational school, demonstrated experience working in an IT service desk environment installing, configuring and supporting desktops, laptops, mobile devices, printers, scanners and related equipment is preferred.
  • Without an Associate's degree or graduation from a vocational school, a high school diploma or its equivalent is required.
    • With a high school diploma or its equivalent, two years of experience working in an IT service desk environment installing, configuring, and supporting desktops, laptops, mobile devices, printers, scanners and related equipment is required.
  • Comptia A+ certification is preferred. MCA Modern Desktop Administrator certification is desirable with MCP desktop certification acceptable.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier.
  • Must pass an extensive background check, including a Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check.

Entry Rate of Pay: $26.14 - $28.28 per hour, depending on qualifications
