The Impact You'll Make in this Role

As a Global Application Engineer supporting Abrasive Systems Division and the Coated Abrasive Belt portfolio, you will lead efforts to drive growth through new product commercialization, new application development, and customer collaboration. Leverages 3M to drive higher impact Customer Inspired Innovation (CII) programs through increased product specialization that complements application expertise. Builds compelling value propositions for effective commercialization.

Provides global coordination of field trials with lead customers and evaluating global competition practices. Replicates and develops high impact product/market applications with a focus on new application development and efficient replication leveraging e-tools. Uses expertise and credibility to shape industry standards, practices, and regulations; harnesses insights from market and customer process expertise. Delivers customer and market focused training through e-media.

As a Robotics Application Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Engineering and optimizing new robotic abrasive solutions for major automotive manufacturers, supporting the build, installation, start up and ongoing support at the customer site
  • Troubleshooting challenges with the performance of robotic abrasive processes at customer sites
  • Leveraging our robotic laboratories to develop and prove viability of solutions for automating our customers' processes
  • Providing insight on customer needs as a member of 3M product development teams collaborating on new solution development
  • Developing new methods to evaluate abrasive solution performance

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a Science / Engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Two (2) combined robotics experience working with system design and integration, programming and/or application engineering (an internship or co-op is considered qualifying) in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited institution (that includes robotics coursework or mechatronics curriculum)
  • Two (2) years of combined robotics experience working with equipment design, programming and/or application engineering
  • Two (2) years of experience working with Automotive production, industrial or manufacturing customers.
  • Experience with DC electrical, I/O, Servo drive and motors logic and troubleshooting
  • Robotic programming, software and driver logic knowledge and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Comfortable working at a customer site, with critical installation deadlines
  • Problem-solving interest and skills

Work location:

  • This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN

Travel: May include up to 40% domestic and international
