Application Engineer

Upwing Energy

Katy, TX โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 11 hours ago

Job description

Upwing Energy is seeking an experienced and driven Project Engineer with a strong background in application engineering, high-speed turbomachinery, mechanical design and instrumentation in oil and gas industry. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years experience in applications engineering, technical sales support and managing moderately sized projects with the oil and gas majors. The ability to communicate goals and complex technical details to a large and varied set of stakeholders is critical to success in this role.
The Project Engineer will act as the primary technical interface with operators and be responsible for defining the technical requirements of the project, solution designs, leading pre-deployment application reviews, and building trusted relationships with operators' engineering teams. The Project Engineer will also drive scope, schedule, budget and QA/QC.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
โ€ข Lead application engineering reviews and design technical system level solutions for prospective and active customer engagements - evaluating well data, reservoir conditions, production profiles, and operating constraints to define the right Upwing solution configuration.
โ€ข Serve as the primary customer-facing technical contact during pre-sales, scoping, and early deployment phases. Build and maintain trusted relationships with operators' engineering and operations teams.
โ€ข Interpret and review well schematics, completion diagrams, P&IDs, and production data to assess application fit and identify technical risks early. Collaborate with internal product and engineering teams to ensure proposed solutions are technically sound, deployable, and aligned with Upwing's product roadmap.
โ€ข Lead the full lifecycle of upstream gas compressor projects-from planning and detailed engineering through execution and closeout-covering pipelines, valves, flow meters, and control instrumentation.
โ€ข Develop and manage project scope, schedule, budget, logistics, and resource allocation to ensure delivery of defined objectives.
โ€ข Oversee installation, calibration, and integration of piping, valves, sensors, and flow meters into pipeline and compression systems. Ensure seamless connection to SCADA systems and collaboration with I&C engineers for data acquisition, safeguarding, and control logic.
โ€ข Manage associated civil engineering activities such as foundations, structural supports, and trenching. Supervise piping and mechanical installations to ensure technical quality, constructability, and adherence to design.
โ€ข Lead QA/QC programs across fabrication, sourcing, and installation phases. Conduct audits, inspections, and tests to verify compliance with quality standards, material specifications, and performance before commissioning.
โ€ข Monitor budgets and schedules, enforce cost control measures, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies. Provide regular project performance reports and updates to management and stakeholders.
โ€ข Direct multidisciplinary teams-including civil, piping, and instrumentation engineers-and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Mentor and develop staff to enhance team capability and performance.
โ€ข Ensure full compliance with HSE standards and promote a proactive safety culture through audits, training, and enforcement of all safety protocols.
โ€ข Maintain effective communication and decision-making even when working independently or remotely.
Skills, Experience, Education, and Abilities:
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, or related engineering field.
โ€ข Minimum 3 years of experience spanning application engineering and project execution in oil and gas - service/vendor-side experience with direct operator engagement strongly preferred.
โ€ข Strong background in installation, integration, and QA/QC of rotating equipment, piping systems, valves, sensors, and civil foundations.
โ€ข Skilled in interpreting P&IDs, isometrics, and civil drawings, and familiar with ISO, API, IEC, NACE, and ASME standards.
โ€ข Proficient in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera) with demonstrated ability to manage budgets, schedules, contractors, vendors, and internal teams across all project phases.
โ€ข Working knowledge of gas compression, artificial lift, or downhole rotating equipment
โ€ข Thorough understanding of oil and gas sector regulations and standards, ensuring adherence to HSE, quality, and performance requirements.
โ€ข Strong leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving skills with experience managing multicultural, multidisciplinary teams and engaging diverse stakeholders.
โ€ข Strong customer-facing communication skills: comfortable presenting to operator engineering teams, running technical workshops, and responding to RFQs and ITTs.
โ€ข Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, with strong analytical and decision-making abilities.
โ€ข Able to work independently in fast-paced environments, managing multiple priorities while maintaining quality, safety, and accountability.
Intangibles Sought:
โ€ข Strong leadership, organizational, and team-building skills.
โ€ข Excellent communication skills - able to engage with clients, executives, and technical teams.
โ€ข Commercial acumen and ability to align technical execution with business goals.
โ€ข Proficiency in project management tools and processes.
โ€ข Structured and disciplined problem-solver with high attention to detail.
โ€ข Comfortable with ambiguity and fast-paced development environments.
โ€ข Strong organizational and documentation skills.
โ€ข Driven to ensure that issues are resolved permanently and systematically.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
โ€ข The role allows for remote work when appropriate, but the candidate must maintain a strong presence on-site coupled with frequent site visits to upstream/midstream gas installations, vendors and clients, both domestically and internationally.
โ€ข Must be comfortable working in a high-paced environment with field operations in challenging conditions.
