Manage the mechanical engineering Department to ensure the company's design engineering objectives/goals are achieved. The Mechanical Engineering Manager reports to the Technical Service Manager.
Prioritize, schedule and delegate work assignments. Effectively manage the engineering employees to ensure the timely and cost-effective completion of all work and projects assigned to the engineering departments.
  • Manage the Mechanical Engineering department.
  • Oversee all aspects of product and process design, managing the work plans for all projects needing mechanical engineering support.
  • Clearly and consistently communicate product line vision to the engineering organization. Guide engineering organizations efforts to achieve this vision.
  • Develop engineering processes, best practices and test programs that ensure all products meet the appropriate safety, reliability, and performance standards.
  • Provide training to direct and indirect reports as required to enhance departmental performance. This includes regular coaching and counseling on all aspects of job responsibilities.
  • Leverage past experience and strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with sales, operations and service.
  • Ensure engineering systems used are the best possible to guarantee product integrity, reliability and cost effectiveness.
  • Assure all product meets compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards.
  • Responsible for mechanical engineering project(s) which include obtaining customer specifications and designing the mechanical components of the machinery. Works closely with the Sales Department, application of mechanical engineering knowledge of machinery principles and materials, manufacturing methods and processes to insure designs are functional, practical and economical, and satisfy customer operating requirements.
  • Design of machined and fabricated parts (including manufacturing methods) which includes shafts, bearings & housings, valves, drive components, mounting plates & precision spacers, structural frame weldments, sheet metal bins, channels, covers, ducts etc.
  • Prepares proper bills of material based on design and orders necessary control unit(s) for production.
  • Analyze and prioritize projects based on the scope of established internal operations schedule.
  • Interfaces with the Manufacturing to insure machinery designs are properly fabricated, parts machined, and assembled which may include revising of mechanical design specifications/drawings. Interfaces with the Production Department to conduct machinery mechanical testing and interfaces with other departments e.g. sales/marketing, parts, purchasing, etc., to coordinate work/projects to ensure customer on-time delivery. Prepare and direct reports to other departments to address and resolve inquiries and problems.
  • Act as a technical resource for customers and Service Department's Service Technicians to address and resolve inquires and problems. Especially, during machine installation and start-up in customer plant(s).
  • Oversight of the Mechanical Engineers at Axon
  • Assistant in solving problems and design challenges.
  • Manages workload and projects given out to the mechanical engineering team
  • Helps facilitate teamwork and collaboration with other departments within Axon
  • Supports Director of Engineering with task that are delegated to him
  • Customer facing assistance for customer complaints and innovation
  • Provides input on performance reviews
  • Manages PTO & timecards of the team to meet production needs
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • Required 7 + years' experience in design and/ or application engineering.
  • Preferred Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (mechanical/electrical) or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in Packaging Machinery preferred.
  • Proficient with MS Office and knowledge of MRP/ERP systems SAP preferred
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Be able to demonstrate inventiveness and originality/forward thinking
  • Experience with departmental management, strategic planning and goal setting
  • Project Management experience
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize
  • Experience in product development from initial concept to launch (product release)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously
  • Light/moderate travel based on business needs
  • Results-oriented, self-motivated, with the demonstrated ability to lead, coach and inspire others to the same behaviors.
  • Analytical thinker and desirous for root-cause problem solving.
