What is an application configuration analyst?

Application Configuration Analysts are IT professionals responsible for setting up, maintaining, and optimizing software applications to meet an organization’s needs. They configure system settings, manage user access, and ensure software operates efficiently and securely. These analysts work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into application configurations. They also troubleshoot issues, provide support, and may assist with updates and system integrations.

What are some common challenges faced by application configuration analysts when implementing software changes across departments?

Application Configuration Analysts often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders to gather requirements, ensuring changes align with cross-departmental workflows, and validating that configurations do not disrupt existing processes. Navigating competing priorities and managing version control during updates can also be complex. Strong communication and project management skills help analysts anticipate and address these issues, ensuring smooth implementation and minimal downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an application configuration analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Configuration Analyst, you need a solid understanding of application lifecycle management, requirements analysis, and system configuration, often supported by a degree in information systems or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools, enterprise software platforms (such as ERP or EHR systems), and relevant certifications like ITIL or CompTIA is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure that software systems are correctly configured to meet business needs, facilitate smooth operations, and minimize errors or downtime.

What is the difference between Application Configuration Analyst vs Application Support Specialist?

Job description

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As Manager of Software and Hardware Configuration and Data Management within the Mission Management and Integration organization, you will lead a team of configuration and data management engineers and analysts responsible for defining, implementing, and continuously improving Hardware and Software CM practices across Lunar Permanence programs. You will serve as a discipline lead - owning policies, processes, tools, and training - while ensuring configuration management rigor is maintained across all phases of the development lifecycle for both software and hardware systems. You will be at the intersection of engineering, quality, and mission assurance, building and sustaining the rigorous configuration baselines that our mission depends on.

You will build and sustain a culture that values the criticality of rigorous configuration and data management and its direct role in building safe, high-performing spaceflight systems. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

People & Organization

  • Lead and manage a team of Software and Hardware Configuration and Data Management engineers and analysts; responsible for hiring, performance reviews, compensation management, and career development

  • Recruit, hire, and mentor a team; embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin Leadership Principles

  • Serve as a trusted partner to cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, software quality assurance, and Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA), embedding configuration management best practices into every phase of program activities

  • Actively contribute to program milestone reviews - including design reviews, test reviews, and production readiness reviews - ensuring configuration management considerations are thoroughly addressed and documented

  • Work independently toward long-range objectives and determine the approach to solutions without appreciable direction

Software Configuration Management

  • Manage and control software configurations across the full software development lifecycle, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency of all software baselines from development through delivery

  • Lead software design integration within the overall vehicle configuration; coordinate regular configuration reviews to align software development and change activities, including code, requirements, and software version control

  • Lead and facilitate Software Configuration Control Boards (CCBs), configuration audits, and compliance assessments; identify gaps and drive corrective actions to closure

  • Provide technical guidance to software development teams on configuration management principles, software builds, and toolchain best practices

Hardware Configuration Management

  • Manage hardware configuration identification, including part number schema, Bill of Materials (BOM) structure, drawing control, and document tree management across Lunar Permanence programs

  • Establish and maintain hardware configuration baselines - functional, allocated, and product - and manage baseline transitions across the full program lifecycle
