Job description

Service & Installation Technician — Fireplaces & Outdoor Kitchens

Hourly Base + Uncapped Commission | Durham, NC

HomeFlame is Durham's specialist in fireplaces, hearths, and outdoor kitchens. We're a small, tight-knit team where the work is varied, the craft actually matters, and good technicians are rewarded for it — not lost in a crew of fifty. We're hiring a Service & Installation Technician to run installs and service calls as we head into our busiest season.

Here's what makes this different from a typical tech job: on top of a competitive hourly base, you earn uncapped commission on service work and on any upgrades you recommend in the field. Our best technicians treat every service call as a chance to solve the customer's whole problem — and they're paid for it. Your effort is your upside.

Why you'll like this work

No two days look the same. One day you're diagnosing a gas fireplace that won't light, the next you're installing a fireplace insert or setting up an outdoor kitchen. If you like variety, take pride in doing a job right the first time, and want to keep learning your trade, you'll fit right in. We're all constantly learning — new products come through the door regularly, and we dig into the manuals together to master them. We provide training on most of what we install and service, and sometimes we figure it out in the field as a team.

What you'll do

  • Install fireplaces, inserts, log sets, and outdoor kitchen components — solo or with a crew
  • Diagnose, service, and repair gas fireplaces and related hearth products
  • Perform seasonal tune-ups and preventative maintenance for our service-plan and commercial customers
  • Recommend upgrades and add-ons that genuinely help the customer — and earn commission when you do
  • Communicate clearly with customers and keep every job moving forward with a positive experience
  • Keep a safe, clean, organized worksite and log your jobs accurately

What we're looking for

  • 2+ years of hands-on field experience in a trade — HVAC, gas appliance service, fireplace/hearth, plumbing, electrical, or similar
  • Real mechanical and troubleshooting ability — you like figuring out why something's broken
  • Comfort working with gas appliances, or the background to get up to speed quickly
  • Valid NC driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Physically able to handle field work — lift 100 lbs, work in tight spaces, and get on a roof when an installation calls for it
  • Professional and comfortable working in customers' homes
  • Able to adapt quickly, prioritize, and keep the job moving

A strong plus: direct fireplace, hearth, or gas appliance experience; NC gas piping / fuel gas certification (or willingness to earn it); any sales or upsell experience, since this role rewards it; outdoor kitchen or masonry/finish experience.

We can teach fireplace specifics to a solid tech with the right attitude. We can't teach work ethic, honesty, and pride in the job — bring those and we'll build the rest together.

What you get

  • Competitive hourly base, set by your experience and certifications
  • Uncapped commission on service revenue and field upsells
  • Steady, year-round work with a busy heating season
  • Company vehicle for the job
  • Paid training to grow your fireplace and gas expertise
  • A small, respectful team where you're a name, not a number — with a real path to grow as we expand

A couple of honest notes

This is an active, hands-on job — you'll be busy 40+ hours a week, and some weekend availability is needed during our peak season. Installations sometimes mean getting on a roof. We tell you that up front because we'd rather be straight with you than surprise you.
