Job description

Location: Maryland Public Trust Scope: The type of training includes the following: • The training will instruct strategic and written appellate advocacy skills relevant to criminal cases. • Skills covered will include: - How to analyze trial records - How to brainstorm a theory of the case and appellate issues based on a review of the trial records - How to develop a persuasive appellate story from the facts of the case - How to develop an appellate strategy - How to write a persuasive appellate brief, incorporating storytelling elements; primacy; recency; appropriate repetition; fact-based, evocative, and image-creating language and/or graphics; transitions; clarity; and juxtaposition - How to write a persuasive statement of facts in an appellate brief • Instruction will address skills both in theory and through interactive application by the students to a case they have reviewed in preparation for the training. • The instruction will preferably focus on the defense perspective of criminal appeals (i.e., with a focus on representing the person convicted of the crime(s)) • The instruction will preferably qualify for credit as Continuing Legal Education. • Number of People Trained - Approximately 6 in 2026 (Between 2 and 8 in future years) Duration of Training: - 7 hours per day (excluding lunch) for 2-3 days for a total of 21 hours. Position: Legal Writing Trainer Qualifications: • Education: A JD from an accredited law school is the primary requirement. • Experience: Substantial, high-quality legal practice experience in reviewing appellate records and written appellate advocacy. Experience in appellate advocacy in criminal cases is preferred. • Teaching Experience: Prior teaching experience in written appellate advocacy is preferred. Skills: Demonstrated ability to teach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback on appellate strategy, development of appellate issues from appellate records, and appellate writing techniques and best practices. Period: Projected September 2026 Location: Training will be in person, not virtual. Joint Base Andrews is preferred. Other locations in the National Capital Region (Washington DC Area) are acceptable.
