What does an apparel inventory planner do?

An Apparel Inventory Planner is responsible for managing and optimizing the stock levels of clothing and fashion items in a retail or wholesale environment. They analyze sales data, forecast demand, and coordinate with suppliers to ensure the right products are available at the right time. Their role helps prevent overstocking or stockouts, supporting smooth operations and maximizing sales. Effective planners use inventory management software and collaborate closely with buying, merchandising, and logistics teams to meet business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apparel inventory planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apparel Inventory Planner, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in supply chain management or a related field. Proficiency in inventory management software, Excel, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for collaborating with vendors and internal teams. These skills ensure accurate inventory levels, minimize stockouts or overstock situations, and support efficient operations in a dynamic retail environment.

Apparel Inventory Planners often face challenges such as forecasting demand for seasonal or trend-driven products, managing stock levels to avoid overstock or stockouts, and coordinating with suppliers to ensure timely delivery. These challenges are typically addressed by using advanced inventory management software, analyzing historical sales data, and maintaining close communication with buying, merchandising, and supply chain teams. Flexibility and strong analytical skills are essential for adapting to changing consumer preferences and ensuring optimal inventory turnover.

Job description

About Us

We are a rapidly growing, dynamic, contemporary apparel brand capturing global markets with style, elegance and innovation. Operating in a fast-paced retail, wholesale and e-commerce ecosystem, our finance team moves quickly to support our continued expansion. We are looking for a Senior Accountant to anchor our general ledger operations and help elevate our financial reporting infrastructure.

Position Overview

As a Senior Accountant, you will bridge the gap between transactional accounting and strategic financial reporting. You will own crucial segments of the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensure flawless general ledger accuracy, and spearhead compliance initiatives. The ideal candidate possesses a unique blend of public accounting audit experience combined with hands-on, private industry corporate accounting experience. You must be deeply detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and highly adaptive to a fluid, fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Month-End Close & General Ledger: Own the reconciliation, analysis, and maintenance of key balance sheet and income statement accounts. Prepare and post complex journal entries (including ASC 842 adjustments, reserves and intercompany transactions).
  • Financial Reporting & Audit Readiness: Assist in the preparation of timely, accurate financial statements in accordance with US GAAP accounting standards. Leverage your audit background to support the Company’s annual audit, PBC requests and liaise directly with external auditors.
  • Variance Analysis: Perform robust monthly flux and variance analyses on operational expenses, inventory valuations, and revenue streams to provide actionable insights to leadership.
  • Process Optimization: Actively identify bottlenecks in the close cycle and implement automation or process improvements to reduce days-to-close.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Production, Operations, and HR teams to resolve accounting discrepancies and other related issues.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 3 to 4 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • The Hybrid Background (Strongly Preferred): A proven track record that includes experience in public accounting (Audit/Assurance), coupled with hands-on corporate general ledger accounting experience.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or other related field. CPA or progression toward a CPA license is a strong plus.
  • Systems: Proficiency with mid-to-enterprise level ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, Index/Match). Experience in omnichannel consumer goods, retail, or apparel inventory accounting is highly advantageous.

Key Traits for Success

  • Detail-Oriented: You have a sharp eye for discrepancies. You don't just find imbalances; you dig into the data to understand why they happened and how to fix them permanently.
  • Exceptional Communicator: You possess strong verbal and written communication skills. You can explain complex financial concepts clearly to non-finance partners and write crisp, concise documentation.
  • Deadline-Driven: You thrive under the healthy pressure of a tight close schedule. You prioritize effectively, manage your time proactively, and consistently deliver accurate work on time.
  • Adaptive & Agile: You excel in a vibrant, high-growth, fast-paced environment. When priorities shift or new business models launch, you adapt quickly and keep the numbers steady.

Physical Requirements:

  • This position is a full-time role that requires frequent use of a computer, mouse, and keyboard.
  • Frequent sitting.
  • Occasional standing, bending, stooping, and walking.
  • Must be able to lift to 25 lbs.
