About the role

As Head of Environmental, she or he will lead the environmental strategy, governance, and regulatory compliance programs for Pier 400, one of the largest and most technologically advanced terminals in the world. This role provides strategic leadership to ensure the terminal operates in full compliance with applicable environmental regulations while advancing sustainability initiatives that support operational excellence and the long-term objectives of APM Terminals and Maersk. As the terminal's senior environmental leader, the role holder will partner with terminal leadership, corporate functions, regulatory agencies, customers, and external stakeholders to identify environmental risks, influence business decisions, and drive continuous improvement in environmental performance.

What you'll be doing
  • Develop and execute the terminal's environmental strategy in line with business objectives, corporate sustainability commitments, and regulatory requirements
  • Act as the principal environmental advisor to the Managing Director, Director of HSSE, and Senior Management Team
  • Lead the terminal's ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ensure compliance with federal, state, local, Port of Los Angeles, and corporate requirements, including SCAQMD, shore power, SWPPP, SPCC, and NPDES obligations
  • Drive emissions reduction, waste minimization, and terminal electrification and decarbonization initiatives in partnership with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Procurement, and Projects
  • Build strong relationships with regulators, the Port of Los Angeles, customers, and community stakeholders, and represent the terminal during inspections, audits, and permitting activities
  • Manage departmental budgets and oversee environmental consultants and contractors
  • Lead incident response, investigations, and corrective actions, and keep emergency response plans current
  • Coach, mentor, and develop the Environmental team to build technical capability and succession strength

What we're looking for
  • 10+ years of demonstrated leadership in environmental performance, with the ability to communicate and negotiate confidently with agencies, legislators, NGOs, and customers
  • A four-year degree from an accredited college, or equivalent environmental experience of five or more years, plus a master's degree and/or relevant environmental certifications is a plus
  • Strong accountability, with the ability to develop strategy, assess risk, and recommend practical mitigations that maintain HSSE standards
  • Agility to adapt to change quickly, and a collaborative approach to working across teams and boundaries
  • Broad functional expertise in environmental compliance and ISO 14001 management within a large, complex operating environment

Salary: $140K - $175K Location: Los Angeles, CA

Role Scope & Work Environment

You will report directly to the Interface & Integration Director. This role has no direct reports but is expected to supervise multiple contractors and third-party vendors. Work is performed primarily on-site at the terminal in Los Angeles, CA, across indoor and outdoor environments, with occasional domestic and international travel.
