What is an API 653 tank inspector?

An API 653 Tank Inspector is a certified professional who inspects, assesses, and ensures the integrity of aboveground storage tanks according to the standards set by the American Petroleum Institute (API) 653 code. Their main responsibilities include evaluating tank conditions, identifying potential issues such as corrosion or leaks, and recommending necessary repairs or maintenance to keep tanks safe and compliant with regulations. API 653 inspectors play a critical role in industries like oil and gas, where proper tank maintenance is essential for environmental safety and operational efficiency. To become certified, inspectors must meet specific education and experience requirements and pass the API 653 examination.

What is the difference between Api 653 Tank Inspector vs API 570 Piping Inspector?

AspectApi 653 Tank InspectorAPI 570 Piping Inspector

Work EnvironmentStorage tanks, petrochemical facilitiesPiping systems, refineries, chemical plants
Industry UsageOil & gas storage, tank maintenancePipeline, refinery piping inspection

Both roles require API certifications and focus on inspecting equipment in the oil and gas industry. The Api 653 Tank Inspector specializes in storage tanks, while the API 570 Piping Inspector focuses on piping systems. Their work environments and industry applications overlap but target different equipment types, making each role distinct yet complementary in industrial inspection teams.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an API 653 tank inspector?

To thrive as an API 653 Tank Inspector, you need in-depth knowledge of aboveground storage tank construction, maintenance, and repair, typically backed by an API 653 certification and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with inspection tools, non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, and digital reporting systems is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help inspectors accurately assess tanks and clearly report findings. These skills ensure tanks operate safely and compliantly, preventing environmental hazards and costly failures.

What challenges does an API 653 tank inspector face during field inspections?

API 653 Tank Inspectors often encounter challenges such as accessing difficult-to-reach areas of large storage tanks, accurately identifying corrosion or structural defects under varying environmental conditions, and ensuring compliance with both client-specific and regulatory standards. Inspectors must also coordinate closely with maintenance teams and site management to schedule inspections without disrupting operations. Adaptability, strong communication skills, and a thorough understanding of inspection procedures are essential for overcoming these challenges and maintaining safety and reliability.
