The Manager, Indirect Tax is responsible for leading day-to-day indirect tax operations across C Spire’s Wireless, Fiber, and Business Technologies lines of business. This role owns the full indirect tax compliance portfolio — sales/use tax vendor oversight, property tax management, business license administration, local franchise fee compliance, and unclaimed property — and provides direct supervision and technical mentorship to the indirect tax analyst staff.**Responsibilities:****ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:*** Manage day-to-day indirect tax operations and compliance calendar — month-end close, returns cycle, account reconciliations, and annual compliance deadlines across all tax types* Review month-end indirect tax calculations and journal entries; ensure appropriate documentation, approvals, and internal controls are in place* Own account reconciliation review for all indirect tax liability accounts (Sales Tax, 911 Fee, Use Tax, Excise Tax, and Unclaimed Property); investigate and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner* Supervise transactional tax calculation processes including technical inventory issuance sales and use tax, non-PO invoice use tax, and self-assessed use tax reviews and corrections* Oversee transaction tax return data preparation and delivery to third-party vendor; review return packages, resolve variances, and manage agency notice responses* Perform monthly reconciliation of third-party vendor filing reports against Vertex O/L Series calculated output by line of business — identify and resolve variances before submission* Validate accuracy of billing data feeds into Vertex; flag and resolve data integrity issues with Tax Operations* Maintain indirect tax configuration and master data: billing grid updates (Vertex tax category and code assignment) and Vertex Series L quarterly rate and rule updates* Manage exemption certificate lifecycle — collection, validation, renewal, W-9 requests, resale certificate package preparation, customer exemption maintenance, and customer sales tax refund support* Oversee the property tax compliance cycle in coordination with third-party vendor — including rendition filings, appraisal notice review, appeal evaluation, and payment management across all jurisdictions* Coordinate franchise fee compliance activities — maintain Vertex L Series rate tables, data collection, calculations, workpaper preparation, filings, payments, notice management, and alignment to close and forecast processes* Coordinate unclaimed property and business license compliance — data aggregation from Oracle Fusion (AP, payroll, AR credits), dormancy tracking for telecom-specific obligations, timely filings, and supporting documentation* Coordinate indirect tax audit support — data pulls, IDR responses, documentation packages, and engagement with outside counsel as needed for sales/use, property tax, and franchise fee audits* Implement remediation actions identified through audit findings; update controls and procedures accordingly* Lead issue research and technical analysis for routine indirect tax questions; escalate complex or high-exposure positions to Senior Director, Indirect Tax* Directly supervise indirect tax analyst staff; provide day-to-day direction, performance management, and technical mentorship* Drive reporting automation and process improvement within the indirect tax function; document standard operating procedures and train staff on updated workflows* Develop, improve, and streamline processes for indirect tax return compliance, reconciliation, and data quality* Perform additional duties as assigned* Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting indirect tax obligations across all applicable jurisdictions; assess business impact and communicate findings to Senior Director and relevant internal stakeholders**Qualifications:**# EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:* Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration* 5–7 years of indirect tax experience; multi-state sales/use tax compliance and property tax experience required* Telecom, utility, or communications company experience preferred; a strong indirect tax generalist with demonstrated willingness to develop telecom-specific knowledge is a viable profile* Experience with managing outsourced compliance providers — data quality oversight and variance analysis required* Previous supervisory or team lead experience required* Proven ability to manage multiple projects and recurring deadlines in a high-volume compliance environment* Excellent written and verbal communication skills required* Familiarity with internal controls frameworks relevant to indirect tax; ability to document and maintain key controls over compliance processes# # SKILLS/EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:* CPA license or CMI (Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation) designation a plus* Vertex O Series a plus & L Series (communications tax) experience a meaningful differentiator;
