What is an AOSP Embedded Engineer?

An AOSP Embedded Engineer is a software developer who specializes in working with the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) on embedded systems, such as smartphones, tablets, IoT devices, or automotive platforms. Their responsibilities generally include building and customizing Android firmware, integrating hardware drivers, optimizing performance, and ensuring system stability on embedded hardware. They often collaborate closely with hardware engineers and use tools like Android build systems, Linux kernel, and various debugging utilities. This role requires deep knowledge of both software and hardware, as well as experience with C/C++ and Java programming.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AOSP Embedded Engineer?

To thrive as an AOSP Embedded Engineer, you need strong expertise in embedded systems, Android Open Source Project (AOSP) internals, C/C++ or Java programming, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like Git, Android build systems, debugging tools, and experience with hardware integration are typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in cross-functional teams and resolve complex technical challenges. These skills are vital to ensuring the successful development, customization, and optimization of embedded Android devices.

What are some common challenges faced by AOSP Embedded Engineers when integrating custom hardware components?

AOSP Embedded Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring hardware compatibility, writing and debugging device drivers, and adapting the Android framework to support unique hardware features. Additionally, maintaining stability and performance while working with custom boards and peripherals can require extensive troubleshooting and collaboration with hardware vendors. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, including hardware designers and QA engineers, is crucial to resolve integration issues efficiently and deliver a robust embedded Android solution.

What is the difference between Aosp Embedded Engineer vs Android Developer?

Job description

Senior Android Platform Engineer AOSP / Android Automotive

Location: Dearborn, MI (Onsite)
Job Type: Contract

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Android Platform Engineer to join a platform stability and systems engineering team. This is a hands-on role focused on diagnosing, debugging, and resolving complex Android platform issues across the Android stack, including the framework, native services, vendor layers, and hardware abstraction layers.

The ideal candidate has strong expertise in AOSP, Android Framework internals, system_server, Binder/AIDL, C++, Java/Kotlin, and low-level Android debugging. Experience with Android Automotive OS (AAOS) is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop Android middleware, system services, and platform-level background services.
  • Debug and reverse-engineer complex Android platform issues directly from AOSP source code.
  • Develop and modify Android Framework components and native services.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues within system_server, including Activity Manager, Window Manager, Package Manager, and related framework components.
  • Troubleshoot Car Service, SurfaceFlinger, graphics, display, boot, and system stability issues.
  • Investigate and resolve ANRs, crashes, black-screen issues, boot failures, hangs, and other difficult-to-reproduce platform problems.
  • Perform detailed root-cause analysis and provide technical direction for ambiguous or high-impact issues.
  • Develop interfaces using Binder, AIDL, IPC, and Android APIs.
  • Resolve Android OS upgrade, platform integration, and vendor-layer issues.
  • Work across the Android framework, native layer, HAL, and vendor components.
  • Diagnose and resolve compliance and platform test failures across CTS, VTS, ATS, and STS.
  • Collaborate with platform, embedded, hardware, and SoC teams to resolve complex integration issues.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in Android Platform / Android Framework development.
  • Strong experience working with AOSP source code.
  • Proven experience developing Android middleware, system services, or platform-level services.
  • Strong knowledge of Binder, AIDL, IPC, and Android system APIs.
  • Strong programming experience with C++ and Java/Kotlin.
  • Experience debugging complex Android platform stability issues.
  • Experience working across Android framework, native services, HAL, and vendor layers.
  • Strong understanding of Android Framework internals and system architecture.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Android Automotive OS (AAOS) and Car Service.
  • Experience with HAL, Vehicle HAL (VHAL), vendor integration, and Android Treble.
  • Experience with CTS, VTS, ATS, and STS.
  • Knowledge of SurfaceFlinger, Android graphics, and display subsystems.
  • Experience with LLDB, GDB, Perfetto, Systrace, and Logcat.
  • Knowledge of Android build systems including Soong and Make.
  • Understanding of Android system/vendor partition architecture.
  • Experience with Linux and embedded systems.
  • Experience working with SoC/silicon vendors during platform bring-up and integration.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Android platform engineer who enjoys solving difficult, ambiguous, low-level problems and can independently investigate issues from symptoms through root cause. Strong AOSP knowledge, systems-level debugging ability, and experience working across the Android stack are essential.
