Antenna Design information
What is an antenna design?
An Antenna Design job involves designing, simulating, testing, and optimizing antennas for applications like telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and IoT. Professionals in this role use electromagnetic theory, computational tools, and measurement techniques to create efficient antennas that meet performance specifications. They work with technologies such as RF engineering, microwave systems, and signal propagation to ensure reliable wireless communication.
What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect in an antenna design role?
Antenna Design professionals typically work on projects involving the development and optimization of antennas for applications such as wireless communications, automotive systems, aerospace, or IoT devices. Daily responsibilities often include designing antenna prototypes, running electromagnetic simulations, conducting lab testing, and troubleshooting performance issues. You will collaborate closely with RF engineers, product development teams, and sometimes with manufacturing or customer support personnel to ensure designs meet specifications and industry standards. The work environment is usually a mix of office-based design and laboratory testing, offering exposure to both theoretical and hands-on engineering challenges.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the antenna design position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Antenna Design, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, electromagnetic theory, and RF circuit design, typically backed by a relevant degree. Proficiency in simulation software such as HFSS, CST, or ADS, and familiarity with measurement equipment like network analyzers is often required, and professional certifications like the IEEE Wireless Communication certification may be an asset. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication capabilities are key soft skills for this role. These skills are essential to ensure antennas meet complex technical requirements, comply with industry standards, and perform reliably in real-world applications.

Job Location: Rockwall, TX
Job Schedule: 9/80 (Every other Friday Off)
Job Description:
L3Harris is seeking a Chief Antenna Design Engineer to serve as a technical subject matter expert in the design of ultrawideband antenna and electronically scanned array (ESA) systems across various lifecycle phases for our Advanced Aperture Solutions (AAS) group. The Chief Antenna Design Engineer will be part of a multi-disciplined engineering team working on diverse antenna development projects. As a Chief Antenna Design Engineer, you will be directly supporting proposal efforts to generate new business, mentor younger peers, lead timely program execution, develop state-of-the-art antenna designs, and ensure antenna systems designs meet or exceed customer requirements. The role is for an individual who is open to additional learning and would relish the opportunity to immerse themselves in both project work and research and development activities.
The Advanced Aperture Solutions (AAS) group is quick reaction capability (QRC) aperture solutions business based in Rockwall, TX. AAS is responsible for the design and development of high-gain antenna systems for military airborne, maritime, and ground platforms. Our team has state-of-the-art design tools validated with real hardware prototypes including CST Design Studio Antenna Modeling Software, Circuit Board design software, MATLAB software, SolidWorks software, and a PCB Laser that produces multiple same-day iterations of antenna designs. We ultimately provide critical ISR capabilities to fight and win in the SIGINT operating environment.
Essential Functions:
- Serve as technical authority for complex antenna and RF/Microwave development programs including research, detailed design, and analysis for airborne, maritime, and ground systems.
- Guide the execution of technical design review briefings.
- Assess and report on technical project status, risks, and issues.
