Job description

Front Counter / Cashier

Position Summary: 

The Personality position is primarily responsible for taking orders for food, aiding in the ordering of food, and acting as a cashier at the front counter or drive thru window.  This position also supports all the activities that occur in the dining/front area of the restaurant. 

Primary Responsibilities

The following information represents the majority of the duties performed in the position, but are not meant to be all inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary. 

  • Greets guests and assists in their deciding product needs either from the ordering counter or drive thru window. 
  • Recommends products to ensure guest awareness of promotional products, food contents, and appetizers. 
  • Verifies legal age of customers ordering alcoholic beverages by checking driver’s license or other type of identification.
  • Performs cashier transactions by totaling products ordered, informing customers of charges, making monetary change transactions, and changing register tapes.
  • Prepares drink glasses, salad bowls, trays, etc., as necessary, based on products ordered.
  • Informs guests of service format including information regarding number tent for dining room delivery and directing customers to fountain machines, salad bar, and table settings.
  • Delivers products to guests in the dining room and checks for guest satisfaction.
  • Completes order dispatch procedures for drive-thru orders.
  • Serves as host/hostess when restaurant seating is at or above 90% capacity as directed by management including taking of name and number in party reservations and informing customers of a reasonable “wait” time.
  • Restocks front counter, drive-thru/carry-out condiment areas, cleans and maintains organization of front counter and drive-thru/carry-out areas, cleans restrooms, disposes of trash, sweeps and mops floors, vacuums carpets, and dusts.
  • Answers telephones in a professional manner and responds to the caller’s needs.

Skills and Experience

  • Able to follow and  carry out instructions via written or oral form; to solve simple problems. 
  • Able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure; to perform the four operations with like or common decimal fractions; to compute percent; to perform arithmetic operations involving monetary units.
  • Understand written or verbal  instructions, product labels, receipts, and  restaurant menus.
  • Able to construct and write simple sentences, a series of numbers, names, and addresses. 
  • To communicate appropriately to crew/management and convey a friendly and pleasant demeanor towards guests.    
  • Previous experience not required for this position. 

Licenses/Certificates

  • The position may require a Food Handler’s permit and/or Foodservice Sanitation Certification and/or other individual compliance permits, certificates, or licenses dependent upon the laws of the city or county in which the restaurant is located.

Physical Demands

  • Physical Strength and Stamina Demands:
    • The Personality exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 5 pounds of force constantly in the performance of activities. Force includes push/pull/lift. The Personality is required to perform most work from a standing position.  Work may involve frequent walking, intermixed with sitting for brief periods of time. Work requires stamina to perform duties for extended periods of time typically comprised of 8-12 hour shifts and frequent “split shifts” (4-6 hours shifts with “off time” of 2-4 hours between shifts). Shifts encompass early morning, lunch, afternoons, dinner, and late night.
  • Physical and Sensory Demands:
    • Reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, handling, fingering, feeling, lifting, carrying, standing, walking, pushing, and pulling is required occasionally in the performance of functional duties.  Requires punctual, regular, and reliable attendance.  Normal visual acuity is required to take orders and utilize the POS system.  Normal hearing ability is required to hear information transmitted from interpersonal contacts.  No unusual requirements of tasting or smelling senses are required. 

Working Conditions

  • A Personality is mostly subject to inside environmental conditions, which are protected from the weather, but not necessarily temperature changes. The position provides occasional exposure to extreme heat with temperatures sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort. Wet and/or humid conditions are present where they come into contact with water and other liquids. Subject to frequent washing of hands and arms. 
  • Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
    • Carryout containers, cash registers, computers, dishes, drink machines, glasses, ice machine, paper and plastic cups, pen, pencil, telephone, trays, broom, mops, cleaning chemicals, and vacuum.
