What are animation studios in state?

Animation studios in a state are companies or organizations located within that particular state that specialize in creating animated content, such as films, television shows, commercials, and digital media. These studios employ animators, illustrators, writers, and other creative professionals to produce both 2D and 3D animation. They may work on original projects or provide services for other media producers. The size and focus of studios can vary greatly, with some catering to large-scale productions and others focusing on smaller, independent projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an animator in an animation studio, and why are they important?

To thrive as an animator in an animation studio, you need strong artistic abilities, a solid understanding of animation principles, and typically a degree in animation or a related field. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Maya, or Blender is essential, and knowledge of storyboarding tools or motion capture systems can be advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are soft skills that help animators excel in collaborative and deadline-driven environments. These skills ensure the creation of visually compelling animations that meet project goals and client expectations.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art - Video and Animation

The Art Department at Hamilton College invites applications for a visiting position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2026. We seek candidates with expertise in video and animation whose work is grounded in studio practice, scholarship and teaching. The successful candidate’s research and teaching will situate video and animation practices within historical, cultural, and interdisciplinary frameworks. This is a temporary one‑year position for the 2026‑27 academic year.

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate experience in teaching or working with broadly diverse student populations while contributing to a vibrant learning community that values academic freedom, creativity, and intellectual curiosity.

This position requires a strong grounding in both video and animation production skills, including use of industry standard equipment and software. The successful candidate will be able to teach a strong foundation in perceptual, formal, conceptual and critical skills within a liberal arts context and engage students in the social and theoretical dimensions of contemporary time‑based media practice. We seek candidates who interweave theory and practice, demonstrate effective collaborative skills, and show a commitment to undergraduate education in the liberal arts.

Qualifications: MFA, record of effective teaching in higher education, and a demonstrated record of scholarly and creative achievement. Teaching load: three courses in the fall and two courses in the spring, with additional responsibility for mentoring senior concentrators. Salary range: $77,900 to $80,400 for a 9‑month base.

Application materials: letter of application, curriculum vitae, PDF with up to 10 links to time‑based works, PDF with up to 10 links to former students’ works, and contact information for three references. Letters will only be requested of finalists. Submit via Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/182971. For questions, contact Robert Knight, Search Committee Chair, at rbknight@hamilton.edu. We review applications beginning April 5, 2026 and the position will remain open until filled.
