Work Arrangement:
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role

GM is looking to hire aSenior Android Software Engineerto lead design, development, and longterm maintenance ofinvehicle infotainment (IVI) appsandOTA update clientsonAndroid Automotive OS (AAOS)for GM's nextgeneration softwaredefined vehicles. The engineer will own major features endtoend (architecture, implementation, validation, launch, OTA) and set the bar forsafety, performance, reliability, and maintainabilityacross Vehicle Applications & Services, with software deployed at scale across global fleets.This engieer will own features from concept through production and fleetwide OTA rollout bycollaboratingwith UX on automotive interaction patterns and multidisplay HMI (cluster, center stack, HUD), Systems/platform on AAOS/AOSP integration and vehicle signals, QA/validation on vehiclelevel test plans and defect resolution, Product on feature definition, tradeoffs, and prioritization.

What You'll Do

  • Design,develop,build, andmaintainIVI apps and servicesonAAOS / embedded AndroidtoevolveOTA update clientswith robustrollback, error handling, and fault recovery.

  • Own UX and interaction flows for key scenarios (e.g.,media, navigation integrations, appstore experiences, messaging), ensuring experiences areintuitive, glanceable,compliant withAndroid Automotive UX,driverdistraction,safetyguidelinesand meetGM and regulatoryrequirements.

  • Drive performance on constrained hardwaretooptimizestartup/resume times,frame rate,animation smoothnessand managememory, CPU, I/Ofor predictable behavior.

  • Integrate apps withvehicle properties, VHAL, navigation, media, voice assistants, andbackoffice servicesvia AAOS APIs and IPC (AIDL,gRPCor similar)and instrument apps withlogging, metrics, and tracesfor observability, field triage, and continuous improvement.

  • Define and collaborate onunit, integration, UI, and bench/invehicletest coverageand ensurefast coldboot and resumeand supportmultiversion AAOS/Androidand long vehicle lifecycles.

  • Apply and evolveclean, modular Android architectures(e.g., MVVM + Jetpack) for large, longlived automotive codebasesby partneringwithplatform teamsonAOSP/AAOS customization and integration.

  • Diagnose and fix issues acrossapp, framework, and systemlayers.

  • Contribute to architectural decisions onsystem services, permissions, and security modelsandinfluence platformlevel improvements instability, performance, security, and developer efficiency.

  • Define and implementvarioustest strategieslikeUnit tests(e.g., JUnit,MockK/Mockito),UI tests(e.g., Espresso, UI Automator),System/integration tests.

  • Build andmaintaintest automationfor emulators and onbench environmentsand integrate automated testing intoCI/CD pipelinesandautomated build systems.

  • Providetechnical leadership and mentorshipto midlevel and junior engineers includesleadingcodeand designreviewsand championbest practices

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degreein CS, Software Engineering, EE/CE, or related field, orequivalent experience.

  • 5+ yearsofAndroid developmentwithproductionAndroid appsorAndroidbased embedded softwareandproven experience onAAOSor deeply embedded Android platforms.

  • Expert Kotlinskills; strongproficiencyinKotlin and/or Java, Android SDK, andmodern Android patterns(coroutines/Flow, Jetpack, MVVM or similar).

  • Deep understanding ofApp/activity lifecycles,Background limits, scheduling,backgroundwork,Coroutines/Flow, concurrency, configuration changes,Memory management, profiling, and performance tuning,Androidpermissions, security, and system services.

  • Track recordofdesigning, implementing, and shipping complex featuresendtoend in large codebases with strong debugging skills.

  • Demonstratedperformance optimizationon resourceconstrained devices (UI, networking, I/O, rendering), with measurable improvements.

  • Strong grounding insoftware qualitywith experienceautomated testing, code reviews, defensive and secure coding

  • Experiencewritingandmaintaining:Unit tests(JUnit,MockK/Mockito),UI tests(Espresso, UI Automator),System/integration tests.

  • Handson experience withCI/CD pipelines, automated builds, andGitworkflows in multiteam environments.

  • Effectivecrossfunctional collaborationwith UX, product, validation/QA, and platform/system engineers.

  • Clearwritten and verbal communication, able to drive decisions and explain complex topics to varied audiences.

  • Demonstrated use ofadvanced Android concepts(DI, background work, concurrency, profiling) in new features, bug fixes, and refactoring.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 8+ years of experience working directly inAOSP/AAOS platformrelatedcode.

  • Knowledge ofVHAL and vehicle property APIs.

  • Experiencebuilding or integrating OTA update mechanisms.

  • Familiarity withdriverdistraction rulesand invehicle HMI guidelines (OEM, regulatory, industry).

  • Experience withlonglifecycle automotive software, safetycritical or regulated systems (functional safety, cybersecurity, etc.).

  • Strong debugging withlogs, traces, and systemlevel tools.

  • Demonstratedtechnical leadership:

  • Leading designs for complex features/subsystems.

  • Mentoring engineers.

  • Influencing standards, patterns, and tooling.
