Essential Job Duties
The Research Technician will serve as the primary support for the nursery and grow-finish phases of swine production at the Swine Educational Unit. This role is essential to ensuring high standards of animal care, facility maintenance, and operational efficiency. The technician will also support other phases of production as needed and contribute to the unit's teaching, training, and research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily animal care activities including health and welfare checks, feeding, watering, and administering treatments as needed.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records of animals, supplies, and medications.
  • Conduct routine cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance of barns, equipment, and work areas to ensure biosecurity and safety standards are met.
  • Assist with other phases of swine production (e.g., breeding, farrowing) as required.
  • Support the teaching and training activities of the department by working with students and faculty during instructional labs and research projects.
  • Collect and record data for research and performance monitoring.
  • Operate and maintain farm equipment safely and effectively.
Other Responsibilities
  • A moderate amount of physical effort is expected. The employee will be required to lift and carry piglets and bags weighing up to 50 lbs for short distances with or without reasonable accommodations.

Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with swine, poultry, or livestock.
Required License or Certification
  • Must have an NC Driver's License or ability to obtain one upon hire
  • Upon hiring, you will be required to initiate the process of obtaining and maintaining certifications for Pork Quality Assurance Plus, Truck Quality Assurance, Class A Animal Waste Operator, and Pesticide license.
