Job description

Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for performing technical duties in the care of research animals in addition to day-to-day maintenance of assigned animals. Employees in this classification have no delegated supervisory responsibilities but may aid the supervisor in training new employees. Work consists of both direct and indirect contact with animals. Conditions may become stressful because of animal odors. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases, animals exposed to toxic materials, radioactive materials, bites, lacerations, etc. Conditions may become hazardous if animals become ill or are being treated with known toxic substances (i.e., carcinogens, microbial substances. etc). Weekend and holiday assignments on a rotational basis are expected.
Major/Essential Functions
  • Ability to accurately maintain records and documentation
  • Ability to follow written protocols, standard operating procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with researchers, veterinary staff, and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of experience in laboratory animal care, veterinary care, animal husbandry, animal science, or a related field
  • Any AALAS certification

Required Qualifications
Completion of High School or equivalent in education and directly related working experience; successful completion of a recognized course in laboratory animal science. Also six months experience as a Laboratory Animal Assistant I or the equivalent.

Animal Care Services (ACS), part of Texas Tech Research & Innovation, is the centrally administered support service for animal research and teaching programs at Texas Tech. ACS provides year-round care, accredited facilities, and support for approved animal research and teaching. The program's facilities and services are available for all Texas Tech faculty, staff, and students who have been approved to conduct animal research by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
